EASTERN CONFERENCE
#1 Tampa Bay Lightning vs. #8 New York Islanders
-Tampa in 5.
The Lightning finally has the team that may take the Cup, if they play like they have been most of the year.
The Islanders don't have a chance, except maybe supernatural performance by DiPietro.
#2 Boston Bruins vs. #7 Montreal Canadiens
-Boston in 6
With acquisition of Gonchar, the Bruins have genuine point defenceman to get the PP working. It also needs playoff performance from Raycroft, who is just a rookie. It is doubtful Potvin can pick up after Raycroft, since Potvin's not the goaltender he used to be.
On paper, Montreal doesn't have much of a team. Actually, I've been more impressed by Ribeiro-Ryder-Dagenais line more than the Koivu line. Two okay lines and super effort by inconsistent Theodore may get the Habs by the Bruins, but I doubt it.
#3 Philadelphia Flyers vs. #6 New Jersey Devils
-Devils in 7
Tough call.
The Flyers have enough talent to outscore an opponent, but it's the Devils. They perfected the trap and last few weeks or so have been able to score a lot of goals. Plus with Brodeur in net, you can't never rule the Devils out.
#4 Toronto Maple Leafs vs. #5 Ottawa Senators
-Leafs in 6
It's not just because I want to see Alfredsson eat his words.
Both teams are good and both can take the cup, but it comes down to goaltending again. Lalime's been injured last few games and Prusek was inconsistent. Belfour's got health problems too, but if he's healthy, he's the edge the Leafs need to get past the Sens.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
#1 Detroit Red Wings vs. #8 Nashville Predators
-Red Wings in 5
The Red Wings are simply too loaded to blow this one. The Predators have been playing decently with acquisition of Sullivan and Vokoun's been good for them in net, but not enough to upset the Red Wings.
#2 San Jose Sharks vs. #7 St. Louis Blues
-Sharks in 6
The Blues barely made the playoffs having to put on a run to get in after having a bad season. The Sharks seems to have more heart than the Blues.
#3 Vancouver Canucks vs. #6 Calgary Flames
-Canucks in 6
Who keeps putting Canadian teams in same bracket? ARGH!
Anyways, the Flames have one of the best goaltenders in Kiprusoff, but he's not playoffs proven. The Flames also is a weaker team on paper, but they do play with a lot of heart this year.
The Canucks seems to have got over losing Bertuzzi's stupidity and are on a roll. If Naslund stays hot and the Sedins have decent playoffs, they should be able to beat the Flames. Oh, and Cloutier not screwing up. He does have to prove himself if he wants a juicy contract so he does have a good incentive to not screw up.
#4 Colorado Avalance vs. #5 Dallas Stars
-Avalanche in 7
Another tough call.
The Stars have been doing decent. Turco's given them good games and their players did well.
The Avalanche is another loaded team who can take the Cup again. It all depends on who's got more grit and if Aebisher and Salo, who had their funk games, plays good.
Go LEAFS Go!
