Metal Detectors in US High Schools?

Hey all

Personally, I think this is a horrible idea because it costs a lot of money, and it really impacts the school environment negatively. However, this weekend, I havta argue FOR them...any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hehe little late, we've had them in some of our schools for the past 3 or so years. A couple schools even have armed guards patrolling the roofs and grounds.

You have to argue for them?

If I were you, I'd refuse because arguing for something that's plainly wrong is lying.

make it sarcastic and say how good it is that the government now can implement the tools to know everything that everyone has in schools. and that it shouldn't stop there.

and metal detectors have been in inner city schools for a long time. It really concentrates on the wrong problem, instead of trying to get weapons out of school that instance, they should find out what is making people bring them to school in the first place and work on those problems.

oohhh, yea I forgot, thats hard to do, so lets just setup intrusive measures that satisfies a few people in government.

I thinik you can argue that it is totally wrong to let people in schools with guns....but even then you can get attacked on the method....

hehe, sucks to be you.

No you see, he's part of a debate team in the USA, this is how they train them to become lawyers

If he can't argue for them, he'll never eat!

p.s.
PhaseFour, if you want to aruge for metal detectors in school you want to involve your audience. Here is a great argument for you to use, when they ask you to present your arguments, tell them you have just one argument, and ask them to wait while you look for it in your backpack. Then pull out the gun and point it at them. Its sure fire

yeah, i know its a tough argument, but if i dont take it, i screw the entire event

what i wanted to argue was that these metal dectors probably wont pick off all the guns and everything, but they important part was that there is a PERCEPTION of security on campus, which should theoretically make people feel good and learn more

and i know there are schools with detectors already; i went to a local HS in 5th grade and was scanned.

any more thoughts? thanks alot!

Eh they don't work, if you want to get things into a school you will. Also weapons can be made out of basically anything, just look at what they make in prison. I can tell you right anyone could kill someone just as easily by stabbing them in the neck with a pencil as they could by popping a round in their head.

I think the schools are just trying to cover their asses to prevent another columbine so if something does happen they can say that they took "precautionary measures" to prevent it.

As someone mentioned the only way to get rid of drugs and guns in schools is solve the reason why kids bring them which I don't forsee happening any time soon.

Research^

Don't get sucked into an argument about the Second Ammendment.

recall statistics might cover a broad demograghic but convey them in a way that would apply to your specific school district.

recent trends in you area involving aggravated assult/assault with a deadly weapon, crimes involving minors. Most all crimes involving minors are not only applicable by demonstrating deviant behaviour, but impacts your taget audience specifically.

round all statistics up or down to the second figure to compliment your argument.j/k

not much

I don't get this whole trend of kids bringing guns and other weapons to school. When I went to high school in the late 80's (I know I’m dating myself) no one brought that shit to school. If someone was going to kick your ass, they did it with their fists. So if you wanted to protect yourself or settle a score, you would hit the gym and learn how to fight. After the fight whether you won or lost you would earn everyone's respect. Otherwise you would STFU and take your lumps. Who the hell would ever use a weapon that would be admitting you were a coward and the other guy owned you.

NO METAL DETECTORS. people have cell phones, cd players, jewelry all over. piercings etc. at my skool, the administration always wants its dirty hands on our electronics. even when we're not using it, its if they sense its there, they can take it. but mos tof the time, they just tell u to put it up, if they see it.

there hasnt been a skool shooting in a long time anyways.
