anzac day

today marks the commemoration of australian and new zealand service men and women who died in military action. on this day in 1915 the first major military operation by australian and new zealand forces was fought in the first world war. members of the australian and new zealand army corps, aka ANZACs, took part in an operation to open up the black sea to allied shipping by staging an invasion of the turkish coast at the gallipoli peninsula. the invasion met heavy resistance and many people died on both sides. after a long stalemate allied forces were evacuated and that day was remembered for the sacrifices made by the people at war. today anzac day is not only about the initial gallipoli landings but a day of rememberence for all australians killed in action.
some people question why we celebrate a military failure. but we do not celebrate a failure, we recognise the sacrifice people made for their country and the courage shown by the people there. australia was a very young country at the time, eager to show her worth and loyalty to the commonwealth and the british empire. today this idea of 'blood sacrifice' and loyalty to the monarchy may not be so popular but it was a different time then. this was seen as a defining moment for australia.
i don't know what the opinions of people here are about this day but i feel it is important to remember the people who fought and died for something they believed in, whos sacrifices mean i can be here typing this. this post might seem like a lot of crap to some people but i don't care. its the way i feel and i think its important for every australian to at least pay respect to the people who fought for their country, who typified australians and created a legend in the ANZACs, no matter what your individual political opinions are or feelings towards war or being part of the british empire. i feel proud to be an australian on this day and i hope others can too

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Well said!
(though it could've used a few capital letters here and there )

Personally I think that ANZAC day is more significant for Australians than Australia Day...

"Those heroes that shed their blood
and lost their lives;
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
and the Mehemets to us where they lie side by side
here in this country of ours.
You, the mothers,
who sent their sons from far away countries,
wipe away your tears;
your sons are now lying in our bosom
and are at peace.
After having lost their lives on this land they have
become our sons as well."

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

That's me in the corner, That's me in the spotlight, I'm Losing my religion, Trying to keep up with you ,And I don't know if I can do it, Oh no, I've said too much,I haven't said enough, I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing, I think I thought I saw you try.

But that was just a dream, That was just a dream, But that was just a dream, Try, cry, why try? That was just a dream ,Just a dream, just a dream, Dream
