Yup, and losing fair and square according to the rules which had been established for generations. If only he could've carried his home state... |
Fair and square by having a narrow victory in the Supreme Court with the far-right Conservatives giving him a 5-4 edge. Of course it was revealed later just how dirty the GOP got in order to "win" Florida, and just how bloody Harris' hands really were, considering she confessed to it all eventually:

I know it's filled with a bunch of "left" websites, but the points on the votes and the purging are pretty compelling, as are Harris' actions.
It was pretty well-known that Gore wasn't likely going to take Tennessee prior to the election. It was a well-dominated Southern Republican state (Sen. Thompson had a conservative vice-grip on it), and I think he pretty much knew he wasn't gonna get it (much to his chagrin). His eggs were on the remaining swing states and Florida. And the rest, or course, is dismal history...

Actually I looked at this in some other thread ... the ruling composed of two decisions. The first ruling against the constitutional legitimacy of a recount was 7-2. The subsequent decision then to remand the case back to the florida supreme court was the 5-4 decision, of which, one of the disenters was a conservative. But like I said a while back ... I would have been all for a recount if additional recounts had been done for every hotly contested county in the country, not simply the most democrat rich county of florida.
Dammit ... I'm not going to bring up 2000 again. |
Oh yes you are, you know you love rehashing old issues like this!
I honestly would have been for additional recounts everywhere, but of course that wouldn't have been realistic. The focus was unfortunately on one county in Florida, but there was a larger picture that Palast was trying to address that had much bigger implications on the voter purge in Florida, and it wasn't just one county.
| quote: | | And even after all of the votes were FINALLY re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-recounted for the umpteenth time by an independent auditor, the end result was still the same: Gore DID NOT win the state of Florida, and hence did not receive the state's electoral votes which would have ensured his victory. It's really time to get past this issue. |
I believe that the facts of the voter purge that Harris (and Jeb Bush, mind you) pulled off together with Choicepoint tend to show otherwise. Katherine Harris's office, using a computerized database with known faults, misidentified these citizens as felons, then purged them from voter registries - that much is certain. It wasn't just that one little county, it was a voter purge for the ENTIRE STATE!
Unfortunately, Gore didn't pick up on this, and made the fatal mistake of focusing on this one county only. That was certainly the fault of the Dems.
