For something that'll have you putting out decent sounding, finished tracks in no time, I'd recommend either Rave E-Jay or Techno E-Jay. For something more advanced, I'd have to recommend either Fruity Loops or Reason by Propellerheads (my fave). Good Luck -Glyph

Either at your local music store (not CD's & tapes but guitars, recording equip. etc.) or you find pirated versions online. You can probably download demos off their respective web sites to check 'em out first.

I still find Mod Plug Tracker to be one of the best composing progs.. It very easy to use.. and that's something you just can't say about reason.. that program is so f*cking hard to get used to, let alone get a good melody out of it.. . But it is just what you like best.. There are a lot of good progs out there..
I've tried fruity loops but I didn't like the result. It doesn't sound as real as I was hoping it to. I got acid but only a trial =( amd It doesn't seem to let me make my own beat like fruity loops.

Reason from Propellerheads is really the best if you dont't have synth's, if you know reason well, you can make very professionally songs...

hmmmm
Try Fruity Loops 3........you can get it from Morpheus
and REASON is really good too, but , it can be really complicated
you'll need SoundForge as well.....to record your own samples, even if it's from other beats
Or if you have a synth......get Acid Pro, Soundforge, Fruity Loops
I had just recently started making beats and I have something that I might post sometime....
oh if you find Reason on Morpheus, Download the .cue 11 and 12 files and .bin 11 and 12 files once you've got both of these you have to burn each .cue file ( which will link the bin file ) and then set up from disk....
take it easy

well I got the full fruity loops 3 and it is pretty good. I'm playing with it as I type. Some of the soujnds are alot better then the 2.X version I have used b4.
Here is a little sample of what I'm making. I'm kind of stuck at the build up because I have it in my head just can't get it to go into fruity loops right.
A dark feel to this one
