I don't want to sound like a search button nazi, but seriously use it. There has already been a few threads on this in the past month or two and you should find all the info you need in those. Just search phrase matching and you'll find them.

Phrase matching has to do with the song structure. The best way that i think you can understand it is to play any trance song and count along with the beats like this:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
3 2 3.... and so on so that its 4 sets of 8.

when this set of 4 repeats you will notice the changes or progressions in the song, like a cymbal, double kick drum, no kick drum, or another element added to the song. Virtually every song you will ever spin will be exactly like this although some songs make these progressions more obvious than others.

Anyways, not only do you want to have the songs beatmatched (ie: both tracks at 140 bpm), but you want to have the phrases lined up to (beat '1' of the live track lined up with beat '1' of the cued track). This way the mix will sound alot more natural.

Search for this topic online or find links in this forum because some sites will give you a visual graphic of this which can make it easier to understand. if your still unclear about phrases, keep listening to songs and counting along with the beats, cuz if you dont phrase match your mixes will sound like crap even if they are beatmatched. hope this helps!

phase-matching is another term for beatmatching. Line up the bass hits and the snares so that you do not hear a type of "horse-galloping" sound when both records are layed on top of each other.

The bass beat of both records should be layered over each other, as well as the snares (cymbals).

So phrase matching could also be called bar matching which is basically beat matching but thinking about bars (4 or eight beat lengths) instead of single beats?

I would go so far to say that PHASE as opposed to PHRASE matching could be about eq'ing so that when you mix two tracks together you might want to take some of the lo, mid or hi out of one track so that it dosent interfere too much with the other (this of course assumes that the beats and phrases/bars are already matched), which will make for a smoother and more seamless transistion from one track to the next. Please correct me if i'm typing gumf, i've only had my dex for 3 months.

Phase has to do with sound physics, frequencies, hertz, and all that stuff.

Phrase has to do with the structure of a song and mixing 2 tracks so that their structures are in sync.
