Question Brazillians' entering route

Greetings everyone. How is your summer clubbing? I saw some of TOTAs

in the Guvernment with Paul van Dyk several days ago and it was a

marvelous experience to me. I would like to thank you guys all

again!!! Anyway, I am currently studying on a problem about

Brazillians' entering routes to the States. Among several different

routes, I have an interest on Canadian route. I am not sure about I

have a right to write this kind of stuff in TO forum but I would

like to know what you guys think.

(" Before Canada created a visa requirement for Brazilian tourists,

an unknown number of them flew from Rio to Toronto, and then crossed

the border into the United States. When that was a viable means of

entry, a Brazillian coyote worked full-time running other Brazillians

across an international bridge that spanned a river between Ontario

and New York States." (Little Brazil. Maxine L. Margolis (P.54)))

This study is for my final paper and I mostly get my sources from a

book called Little Brazil by Maxine L. Margolis. It was published in

1994. I must say my source is old but I have to pick this book from

my professor's book list for paper. I hope you guys have great rest

days of summer and Happy Canada Day!!!

so ... what exactly is your question?

you're talking about illegal entry to the States via Canada?

if so, Canada now has a bi-lateral agreement with the US (since the 9/11 attacks) prohibiting refugees/ asylum seekers from claiming asylum in the US if their first port of entry was Canada. claims for asylum have to be made in the first country entered - within the first 24 hrs of entry. so, if they arrived in canada first, and did not apply for asylum in Canada, the US has every right to either return (refoulement) or deport them to either Canada (which is the better choice anyways, imo..) or their country of origin.

as in the Brazilian-specific case ... for information, i think you should contact either the Brazilian Embassy in Ottawa itself, the Canadian Council for Refugees that has an extensive database in this regard (CCR), Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC) and/ or the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB).
