Indeed, you need a dedicated mic input, or a preamp if you use the line in.
Normally, all the higher models have the mic input (it's a separate input from the line one, and the socket is colored in red to differentiate it). Usually that mic input also provides some minor power (I think 1.5 V) to power those small mics like Sony makes. This power is not big enough to use on condenser mics (those need 48V usually). If you want to use those, you'll need a separate phantom power box. (There are "pro" porta MD's like the Marantz PMD650 that have all that included, but they are way more expensive).
My MD is one of the older models, I think you won't find it anymore now. But, from experience I can tell, Sony and Sharp ones give the best sound (their compression algorhythm is the best right now). If you want the best quality, you might look at the new HiMD ones, that have a new recording mode without compression (so full quality). You can record up to 30 mins in that mode.
