Party Hat what do you guys look for when purchasing a CD? what makes it interesting ;)

If this has been discuss before, sorry.

a owner of a record labeler
has told me, that dj CD's complications
Gets harder and harder to sell by the day…
Its not what it use to be in the late 90s.

So I’m wondering…..why is that so? what ever happen to good old cd's?
1) Is it because it cost too much $ for the cd/shipping? (ie the cd is not available in your country)
2) It is because of the internet, you have some funky PSP tool that illegally downloads all your goodies for you?
3) ill just download livesets i get new ones all the time there is no need to purchase a cd.
4) i got a mp3 player who needs CD's these days! or i got a CD burner i always burn my friends copy
b) or is it because djs are making poor quality cd compilation...its not worth your $?
if so
what can we do? What makes an interesting complication CD mix?
a) ill buy a cd if it has all the latest/top tunes (ie hammered by all jocks for the last 6-12months)
b) A few of the latest + some old top tunes (top but has not been overplayed).
c) Unknowns/surprises + a few well known (new + old) is good.
d) i don’t care ill buy a cd if its been mixed by a top dj. (top djs are always quality!)
e) its been recommended by a TA or a friend so ill buy it without knowing what to expect (they seem to know what their talking about, I trust them).
f) For real it doesn't matter, ill just listen to a CD sample, if it sounds good ill buy it.
g) other reasons…explain.

HMMMMMMMMM

usually I know where to get hard to find stuff. Shipping is not an issue for me, I'm more concerned about price at times but quality is the most to me. The way I view things, if Arturo hypes it, I won't buy it or if Nell says buy it, I won't. So much stuff is just put what I have on my radio show and make 2CDs and sell it to kiddies. I look for artists that rather innovation rather than play the same shit. I got friends who write for other mags and if some of them rave about something, I'll look into it. I mean GU for the most part was quality music and some songs are still unreleased, that is what I liked. Usually it is how much money I have, being unemployed hurts things, when I go back to working shortly I'll buy more. Problem is not do I want to buy it, it is I simply don't have the time with all my reviewing and other stuff to listen to my own CDs as much as I want to. I am a huge Used CD shopper, I know what is rare and what is hard to find. I see a CD I want, I buy, I bought oakenfold's 2 yrs at cream for 15 bucks, which was a steal.

All mix CD's seem to be made by Dj Pro Tools to ensure you get maximum amount of tunes in there with minimal pleasure. Straight from the buildup to the next breakdown.

I want unmixed compilations, damnit.

Ferrys early trance nation ones were great, 100% tunage (which you dont get now, why should I buy a cd with 80% commercial bullshit and 20% fake trance when I can listen to a liveset etc) If the goods are there, people will buy, but when they'ren ot, they won't

Big Label CDs turn me off....MOS has lost the plot....too busy wanting to get more coin, rather than putting out quality and making money.

And do what? Look at the pretty vinyl?
I want full tunes and I don't have a vinyl player to play them with (well, I do, but the decks are at my friend's place since there simply isn't any room for them here).

Always good to get a nice artist album if it's special but if you're talking about mixed compilations ya, there's just too much mass produced shit and that's why people don't buy so many anymore, I guess a CD really has to be something for me to buy it, I don't really want to pay for a half-assed compilation that's going to lay around the house, there's quality tunes out there but you just have to dig a little.

I think it's got something to do with a 'timeless' factor. For example (this is a bit of a generalisation) but most trance compilations these days are the same from mix to mix. That to me is boring, hence i dont buy trance comps anymore. I like to buy a CD which has a mixture of unique tunes of different genres, but are all mixed together to make one quality CD - eg: Hernan Cattaneo's latest Renaissance. Dave Seamans Renaissance Desire, GU012 and 016, Sasha's GUs, Phil K's Balance 004 (CD1 mainly), 16b's 'Everything All of Them Every Year' or whatever it's called. All these mixes just never ever get boring, and they have different quirks which make them a bit more interesting.

I go for good artist albums too (good in my little unorthodox book of tuneage, anyway)... but ya know what? They're rare. To this day, EDM is still very much a singles and mix-based market. Some albums are like a hybrid between the two which is neato like Cheetos, but I digress.

MoS has many compilations that confuse me. I look at the tracklists and they seem to overlap. Rather confusing in my book, ya know. So the thing for me is: as a yearly retrospective, the Annuals aren't too shabby. But WHAT?!? There's not just Annuals? On top of this they have different Annuals? Spring? Summer? Different geographic versions? WHY OH WHY!? This isn't Pokemon! Not to mention the hyperbole of compilations with the words "Ibiza" in them or "The Best Trance Anthem Album In The World... Ever!" Well, I can't testify to the authenticity of the former nor the accuracy of the latter, so I steer clear of confusion.

Once in awhile, something quirky strolls along and I luv the whole package, including the cover art.
