I would go for a gig....just to be on the safe side, coz I have 512 and I start loading up the VSTs and VSTis and start getting pops and clicks due to lack of memory.

it wont really do any harm to have waaay more than you need. if your CPU is really sh*t hot fast (say 3 ghz) but you only got 128mb of RAM you will be crippling your system because your PC can cope with a massive number of cycles but is bottlenecked by the fact that it has limited space to dump that information to memory.
basically get as much RAM as you can afford. if you are not running a 64-bit OS i dont think your system will not be able to use any RAM beyond a gig anyway.
dannyc, it is definitely a CPU problem. many VSTi's are very CPU hungry especially if they are capable of high polyphony. just think about what kinds of numbers your CPU has to crunch for just 1 voice, filtered with a delay and reverb on it. the calculations it takes to decay that voice and apply an impulse response to it which also decay over time. now up that to 16 voices for 1 instrument loop on 2 basic effects. now think of how many samples and instruments you have playing at the same time with effects going off, automated or otherwise, many of those with more than 1 voice, but more like 16 to 20 voices. that is an enormous strain on even the very best computers which is one reason why dedicated hardware is still desirable because they have their own digital signal processors which handle all the calculations required to generate the sound of the synth in realtime (the other reason is some of them sound really nice). that will ease off the cpu. but if you run multiple VSTi's all of them are going to hit your cpu very hard. thats why DSP cards exist. some of them are like 4 apple mac g5s on a board to handle the strain of really complex effects and synths that would just eat your entire CPU for itself. everyone works within these limitations. you can use more instruments in realtime than i can cuz im on a 1.6ghz p4. and im working with fairly high latency so i cant play live or input notes via keyboard in realtime. if you get pops and cracks increase your latency. your cpu will buffer more sound thus reducing pops and crackles but the tradeoff is that there is more lag between triggering a note and the note sounding. ive hit the limit of fl studio's latency at 371ms on my latest song and im not even near completing it. still need to add more instruments and effects. 100% cpu load. pops and cracks everywhere. i can barely move my mouse now.
anyway, some instruments just munch CPU. reaktor 4's electronic instruments eat CPU like you wouldnt believe. 1 photone module instantly takes 50% of my cpu without anything else. ouch.

Hi,Well i can probably help here.As ive done a similar thing..Running Cubase Sx on a P4 2.4 gig,120 Gig Hd etc.And i had 512mb of ram,and trying to run 4-5 Vanguard's,my computer just died,so i purchased 512mb more,you may see a bit of a difference but it hasnt helped me that much at all.....So i agree its down to PC processor speed mostly,or bump the Midi file down to audio,im told thats how most producers work,when they get this problem.Without having to shell out on loads of new equipment
