Upgrade Options

Hi there,

I'm currently upgrading my existing system to try and get a better sound from my productions.

I've currently got a P4 2.4Ghz, 1024 Pc3200 DDR RAM, and an Audigy 2 Card. I have got a JVC HX-GD7 HiFi producing the final output sound.

I've just recenetly bought a M-Audio Delta 44 as I've heard that the Audigy is not that gr8 for latency.

Has anygot any other upgrade ideas? I was thinking about monitor speakers, tho I dont want to pay any more than £250 and I want something with some reasonable oomph to them (wattage), but also good sound quality. Am I right in thinking that Studio Monitors reproduce how the track'll sound on most speaker systems?

Well, not really .. Monitors will only give you a better idea of what your sound REALLY sounds like, without the sound-coloring (too much bass or highs) that you get on multimedia / car / hifi systems.

So youve got the advantage that, if it sounds very good on your good monitors, then its gonna sound good on almost every decent system.

I cant really help you on getting good monitors tho ... I have some half-decend Samson Resolv 50A.

Would it not better than to switch off all the sound colouring on the HiFi system to get a better representation of the sound, i.e. use the classic eq presets etc, switch of extra bass etc. etc.

no its not that. hi fi speakers tend to reproduce sound very different depending onthe make and so forth. monitors are more uniform in their sound reproduction. i have a pair of aiwa hih fi speakers and the sub reproduction on them is very poor. barely audible. this is on default with no EQ, no bass boost etc. one of my friends DJs through a sony mini hifi. costs alot more than mine and the sub reproduction on that is fairly good. again default. no sound colouration. the bass reporduction is good too but at low volumes you dont pick up the highs at ear level. the other DJ mate ive got has proper floor standing monitors. play a tune through those and move your ear from the tweeter down to the woofer down to the sub woofer. you can hear every tiny bit of sound, the high hats and the harshness of vocals. more down a bit further and you start picking up the mids and the telephone frequencies. down to the woofer you pick up the kick drum thud nice and loud but you start losing the hats and stuff. down to the sub and its all bass. they just reproduce sound really accurately. you just dont get that in hifi speakers.

Whatever you do, don't drive the speakers through that JVC amp either; get yourself a standalone amplifier, or active monitors...

How about just buying some really good headphones?
