Mixing Programs?

I don't think I'll ever be a serious DJ. But my friends have requested that I make a mix of tunes for their Halloween party coming up, and I'm liking the idea of being able to just mess around on my own, for fun.

So I'm wondering, for those of you that mix MP3s, what programs do you use? I'm looking for something not overly complicated, but that won't sacrifice quality for ease of use. Hopefully with a lot of preset effects as well.

And all you vinyl purists, spare me the lectures. I it sounds better, but as I said, this isn't going very far, and I don't feel like spending that sorta cash on just a fun thing.

Thee's quite a few. I'm not a pro DJ, I just have fun doing it.
I use Myxoft's dss dj. If you want it, I'm sure you'll figure out how to get it. You can also attach an external mixer to the setup; which sounds a whole lot better live, but you cant' record without some modifications. Any other questions feel free to email me.

It's extremely easy to use, especially compared to Traktor, PCDJ, and all the others. The other's will have more bells and whistles; but DSS DJ is the easiest and least complicated to set up.

As with any of these apps, you'll need to some sort of system with two separeate outputs: one for the monitor and one for the master.

Soundcard with surround capabilities(monitor on rear and master on front)

two sound cards

sound card and USB sound device.

DSS DJ is the most flexible when it comes to setting up your output options; whereas the others are not. It also does beatmatching extremely well and is simple enough to learn how to use in a couple days.

Well, if you're DJing anything with beats (or anything that will sound crap when not proplerly synced, i.e. most music) - I suggest you don't do it with a live program such as traktor.

Instead, try, as Dirk W suggested something like Acid Pro.
You'll never learn everything to made a nice mix in traktor in 9 days, you need at least a month to get something decent out of it and probably a year for something really good.

Well they insisted, so I told them my mixing would probably sound like shite. I'm not looking to be a mixmaster in 9 days, just to be able to piece something together. I figure beatmatching can't be super hard on a digital program where I can take off split seconds at a time until it's sync'd, then just let the songs run together. I'll work on my technique as time progresses.

With DSS DJ, you can set it to auto beatmatch, and give it the interval when to come in, I think 20 sec is the max. Once you set the cue in each song(just pause each song whereever you want it to start, DSS dj remembers where you set each cue in each so whenever you want to load it again, it's already cued). It'll do everytying for you. As long as the song has a 4-4 beat to it, you won't have any problems.

-Awesome

Dirk, I've no doubt I'm in for a surprise. Whenever I take up these seemingly simple tasks it always spirals out of control. I've grown accustumed to it though, so I'll just see how this one stacks up.

LOL, I know how you feel. I usually always make a simple task more complicated than it has to be and then it goes horribly wrong. My uncle once said something to the effect that if we were outside in the backyard throwing the football around, and I dropped it, I would run all the way around the house to pick it up instead of just picking it up right in front of me....
