My ways on how to get started.

DJ Coleman's Basics on DJing

When i started, i started with the basics. If you go to http://www.fl-studio.com you can find a Music Production studio for about $50.00 then upgrade as you get better. When you get really good, and your sastified, go for something like Reason. I'm just now getting to Reason. FL Studio is deffiently my pick for Audio Creations etc. Its easy to control etc. Also cheap, but effective.

What do you need to get started djing at clubs?
What i use is very simple, yet very effective. I use a Stanton SMX-201 mixer. You can find it for about 80.00 on http://www.samash.com . That will get you started. All you need is two CD players (I use my Computer and my iPod, or i use my CD Player and my iPod).

You really don't need turntables...
More and more people are now towards cd decks etc. You can get more out of it. But if you do want to do turntables the best ones that are cheap is the Numark. You can get the package and it will incude your mixer.

You don't need tons of stuff...
You don't need like Effects and Signal Processors when you first start djing. Your going to waste your time.. why? Becuase you have to get good at one thing at a time. Once you get good at one thing, thats when you can get effects etc.

Want to get known?
This is my way on how to getting known first. First off it takes time. I got lucky by knowing people that told other people and so on. I suggest you go to http://www.thedjlist.com set up a user name and sign up for the DJ Rhealm thing. You can add your mixes, and biography, and links, and charts, events etc. Its a nice tool.
All you need from there is people to vote for you. Get a site, and post you link to The DJ List on there.

My advice on getting a record contract..
Just be paticent, it will happen. Try to get to know someone that has like a uncle or something in the record contract bussiness. The way I might get my contract is that I knew a guy that works for a record contract company. All you need is time. I'm also in a big school with almost 3k people.

Thats all for now. I will be editing as I get more info up!

Re: My ways on how to get started.

sorry if i sound like a shit, but i don't think any of this is particularly good advice for a beginner DJ.

firstly, this has nothing to do with DJing, everything to do with production. secondly, if you get FLstudio and are happy working with it, there is no reason to upgrade to reason. they both do very similar things, just in different ways.

mixer - fair enough, but the rest of the equipment you state are about as useful as a straw fire blanket if you are serious about playing in clubs. ipod?? lol.. incidentally, an ipod costs only a small amount less than a cheap CD deck. don't waste your money. if you are truly looking to start DJing but dont want to shell out on the equipment just yet, have a look at some of the DJing progs like traktor or PCDJ, and forget about the mixer for the time being.

i dont see how you can get more out of it as a beginner using CD decks. on the contrary, once you have learnt the basics on vinyl you can easily transfer that to a cd deck, whereas it is not so easy going from cd decks to vinyl, as you have to learn the whole vinyl manipulation thing. if you are serious about playing in clubs, i would reccommend starting on vinyl, because in most clubs you will find a setup consisting of 2 turntables and 1 cd deck.

if you are buying turntables, don't get a package. they are rarely any good. for a beginner, a decent setup i would reccommend is 2 x numark tt200 + vestax vmc002 mixer (or the stanton one stated above). if you are going for cd decks, look at the numark axis9 or the pioneer cdj100.

you are forgetting the most important people in your bid to make a DJ career for yourself. promoters. its all fine and dandy promoting yourself on the internet, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty there is nothing better than giving a promoter (or for that matter, anyone) your CD. remember, they arn't always looking for a new DJ, but sometimes you can make them want a new DJ just burn 100 promo CD's, dish them out to anyone who will have them, you never know who might end up with one! but always always always try and get them to promoters somehow.

again, nothing to do with DJing, and still poor advice for a budding producer. it won't just happen, and do you know how difficult it is to get a friend with an uncle who works at in-tec?

what you actually need for this, is skill, talent, persistance and luck. again its all about bombing people with CD's, particularly a label's A&R dept. get your tracks to as many DJ's as possible, as plays from a DJ count for a lot in terms of getting a label to sign you. but enough of this bit, this is the DJ forum don't you know
