W-w-why d-d-d-do we get... erm... nervous when we need to say something?

I know it's often out of insecurity, but God, I hate it. So, there's this ambassador who's trying to make some business with my university, and, after my boss talked to him about the projects our centre has (and I talked to him about a particular project I'm working on), he decided it would be a nice idea to chat. Instead of telling him how interested I am about the projects (which is true), we talked about the weather and how many students study in the university (which I didn't know, and ended up giving the wrong information - luckily, he was a bit confused so I hope he thinks he got it wrong ).

I'm a young jedi with loads of things to learn, heh, or I just didn't the right thing not being aware of it.

being nervous is natural, but it can be conquered over time, with practice. People aren't usually born public speakers-its a skill.

And especially nowadays when so much of our communication is done through phones, e-mails, IMs, and posts, it's a no brainer that we all have trouble speaking to ppl of influence or large crowds. we don't practice talking to others in person enough anymore.

It's a funny thing - I'm able to talk in front of hundreds of people, but when it's just a few persons (or just one) in an important situation, it happens

I'm the same way. I'm actually in a public speaking class and there's only about 10 of us...talking in front of them is nerve racking!

Same thing for me. I can do well in presentations to large and small crowds. But when it is person to person it gets complicated for me and my tongue. It's like I'm cursed.

I've always noticed that if you say something spontaneously to a large group of people, you don't get time to be nervous. If I have a presentation to do, I get nervous about it on the day. But if I randomly ask a question in a lecture or something, without thinking about it first, I don't feel embarrased at all. Weird.
