Whatever happened to English football clubs being alright?

These days it seems that English football clubs are well behind their counterparts from other leagues.

Why have English clubs fallen so far in quality in recent years?

Lets have a quick look at the English clubs in the champions league.

Liverpool: Haha, how shit are they? In the last game they got beaten by Monaco and you could tattoo the words 'team work' onto each of their foreheads and they still wouldn't know what it meant.

No-one is under any illusions that this once great club that used to win stuff has no hope of doing so ever again, they have totally changed a winning culture into one laziness, poor buying and a pretty low care factor about anything. The most they can hope for is qualifying for the champions league and trying to play as many games as possible to make some money.

Manchester United: Fergie has lost his touch, the previous champions have lost their touch and they continue to buy overpriced shit players. Don't believe the hype that their younger players will become stars and will help regain previous glory because you might as well go buy a lottery ticket. Yesterday's heroes in the full sense of the term, no chance of getting near to winning the champions league.

Arsenal: A team that is good when the going is good, but choke when there is any hint of pressure. The biggest team of softcock pansies in world football that freak out when it comes to running onto a pitch with the champions league music. Having French in the team is some excuse, and they only are decent domestically because the standard of opposition is so weak.

An absolute joke of a team that will fall apart shortly in the champions league, unless you consider that they might have already done that.

Chelsea: You know if someone outside of England supports Chelsea that they've only been following the game for a couple of years or less. After breaking all previous records of spending the most money without actually winning anything, Chelsea are set to become the running jokes of world football for many years to come.

The only conclusion is that English football has concentrated for too many years on marketing, buying big name rejects from other leagues, and having the weakest coaches, and the recent record of English clubs and players on the world stage is evidence of this. The English Premierships needs to consider bringing in some minimum standards of technical skill, maybe the players can do some sort of exam, so that we don't have to endure watching these hacks kicking a ball from one end to the other in the air.

Not trying to defend English football but Chelsea has one of the best records in this years champions league and currently top their group. Man Utd also top their group. Which of the German "giants" of world football currently top their champions league group?

I wouldn't say that English football is shite. For several years running in the late 90s Italian clubs failed to make it to the Quarter finals (if the knockout stages at all), and Spanish clubs (apart from Real Madrid) have only come to the forefront during the late 90s (with the demise of Italian football during that time). Dominance of regional football comes in waves.

Your analysis of the teams seems to be simplistic at best and restricted to general, layman impressions that tabloids like The Sun like to propogate. Manchester United have consistently made it the quarter finals or semi finals for the better part of a decade now. Chelsea finally seem to be headed in the right direction under the command of Maurinho (albeit thanks to the lubrication of Russian oil) and you can only really start calling them a joke if they don't win anything this year.

If we really must be captious; Spanish, Italian and German clubs are just as amiss as English clubs as witnessed by their resignation to two clubs from traditionally inferior leagues last year: French (Monaco) and Portugese (Porto).

that's going too far. arsenal are undoubtly a world class team, they might not be on one of their best moments but they do have the talent and team structure.

Been following football for 10 years, enough? I understand what you're saying though, i've never liked them that much, and i'm only supporting them cause they have at least 7 portuguese guys there. However they seem really damn solid now, so it's quite possible they might end up actually winning something this year.

Again an overstatement. I'll agree that english clubs and the premiership are a bit overrated, but you're making it sound like they're complete crap, and they're not by any means.

Anyway dunno why i'm replying seriously to you, you've proved to be a flaming troll in the past.

and the Everton of the 80s.

I'm afraid I'll have to say the import of foreign players. I wish the English League would just be English like it used to be. I can't stand teams like Chelsea who have one or two (at best) home players.

actually that's crap and you know it. 1980's and mid 90s = English teams with mostly English players = great teams like Everton, Liverpool, Man United. In the last 6 or 7 years, the import of foreign players (a lot of it has to do with a lack of English managers) and the result has been less successful English teams. Not wholly to blame, but definitely a part of it.

It has nothing to do with race, but it's my opinion that the European Leagues should put a cap on how many foreign players they can have on each team. I know I'm not alone on this.
