Here's the deal. I wanna take the train down to NYC, buy a car and drive it back here. So i found the RIV website that explains how to do it and it seems easy enough. The last remaining issue is insurance. All it says is "arrange for insurance." Which has to be under my father's name. And i'm gonna be the only person present in NYC and on the border. So what the hell do i do? I was thinking of telling the insurance company that he's the one who's gonna buy it there so that they issue the paper with the car's VIN and his name on it. Then i could present it at the border just say i'm covered by the policy. Once here, i could transfer the ownership to him so that he would have the ownership paper with his name on it for the insurance co.

When my uncle lived in Chicago he had a classic car dealership and I drove back with a Mustang convertable and Porche 924 for me and my brother to use during a few summers when I was in high-school (before I bought my 5.0). It was him to taught me how to drive standard on a Corvette Stingray ("here's keys to the vette, go learn..."). Cool dude.

Mind you the cars were going back to him at the end of the summer, so it was no formal importation, so I'm not familar with that.

But what he always did provide me was: ownership, a letter from dealer explaining the short term loan, dealer insurance slip and plates.

I never had a problem bringing any of the vehicles across, or returning them.

I was considering driving my car all the way to Toronto... or even shipping my car up there, but I have no idea what kind of legal papers I would need. Would my California drivers lisence be covered in Canada as well?

I guess I have to go to DMV and find out.

Are u moving up here? And yes, your US license converts to a CDN one. All Canada is concerned about is getting their $. I had to pay $1100 to import my '97 in after i moved here (waited a while to do it, finally did it in 2000). Wish I never did, as insurance costs well over double I was paying in the US. Also, if u ever ride one of the toll highways & have a US car, they never could bill u for using it. lol!

Ya, I'll be up in TO for a while ... and I'll need a car, cuz I don't want to rely on people for rides everywhere. But damn... double the insurance???? I thought it was bad enough already!!! And $1,100 to import my car?? I'd rather drive it up there if that's the case!!!

That IS if u drive it up here. Basically, it's giving your car canadian citizenship. That money is going to taxes- Canada does anything to get a buck. (5 yrs later, my car is a 'citizen', and I'm still not, LOL!).

If it's only temporary, or only for a year, don't even bother switching anything over. It's not worth it. If u get into an accident & need to make an insurance claim, say you were on vacation. Hope u know how to drive in the snow!!!
