Hey!

I have a SB live! running with KX drivers. I can get the latency down quite a bit ( have it at 5ms) but when I run my hardware synth via fruityloops I have to shift all the tracks forward to get the synth to sync.
It's always a bit off.

Will a new soundcard like M-audio's Delta 44 get the latency down to 0 or 1ms and eliminate my problem?
I would like to be able to lay out a midi track for my synth to play in realtime and have it synced with all the VST synths and samples that I have running. Having to shift everything forward really(!!) kills my creativity. I just want everything to run as smooth as possible.

I have the midicable hooked up to the joystick input on my pc, could that also be a part of the problem? Do I need to get a new midi interface? Or will a new soundcard do the job?

Mate, 5ms is pretty low as far as latency goes. I don't think you will get 0ms on a delta 44. It sounds like the real latency problem is with your hardware synth and not your VST plug-ins. Perhaps the weak point in your chain is due to using a games port as your main midi interface. Putting in a delta 44 will mean you still don't have a dedicated midi port as the 44 only has audio lines.

Yeah 5ms it pretty low. It should be enough , atleast that's what I thought.

The first part of the clip is my Jp8080 playing the bass in 5ms.
On the second part I shifted the kick forward 0:06 sec, that's the kinda timing I want without having to shift all tracks.

The KX driver allows me to get the latency down to 2ms but when I have it that low everything pops and crackles. The cpu gets really loaded.
I'm running a 1700mhz duron with 512ram and two 40gb hard drives.
Do I need a faster computer or just more ram?

Yeah I saw that, it's a shame because I really like the breakout box.
What soundcard could I get that is equaly as good or better with midi in/out puts?
A Audiophile 192 card perhaps?

dunno if the phile has midi tho but I know that the wamirack has it (friend of mine owns one )

Yeah, I run an audiopulie 24/96. I haven't had a look at the newer version, I assume it's just upped the sample rate, but mine has midi in and out, stereo in and out and digital signal in and out. If you need more audio ports, then you might have a look at a bigger card like the delta 10/10LT which has midi and plenty of RCA in/out ports.

Yeah, I run an audiopulie 24/96. I haven't had a look at the newer version, I assume it's just upped the sample rate, but mine has midi in and out, stereo in and out and digital signal in and out. If you need more audio ports, then you might have a look at a bigger card like the delta 10/10LT which has midi and plenty of RCA in/out ports.

Edit, just had a look at the audiophile 192 and it does have midi. the audiophile and the 10/10lt don't have boxes for the cables, just the break out leads attatched to the PCI card. From personal experience, it hasn't been a hastle not having the break out box though as all the cables are tucked away behind the computer and never get unplugged unless I'm reorganising the equipment (which happens about once a year).

M-audio's 10/10lt looks like the piece for me, plenty of in's and out's to play with.

I run the Delta 10/10 and had it on a 2.4 Ghz P4 running at aound 10ms and now I'm running on a dual Powermac 2Ghz G5 with 3.5 GB of RAM and I'm at 8.5ms stable.
A zero latency is impossible! 5ms is damn good. Anything below 10ms is good enough for playing live VSTis. I don't use fruity but Cubase is clever enough to compensated for that dely. I never had a single timing issue due to the latency.
I know in Logic you have to set the overall latency. Maybe Fruity has got the same - I mean every serious production tool should.

Have a look on google about delay compensation in Fruity.

So instead of me shifting the tracks manualy to get the timing down, Cubase does that for me? That's pretty cool.
