Unwanted `invitations' to local events are the latest form of spam to hit text-messaging

JORDAN HEATH-RAWLINGS
STAFF REPORTER

Depending on whom you ask, they are either invitations to exclusive parties or a gross invasion of personal privacy.

They're unsolicited text message invitations — 136 characters long, max — which are landing in the inboxes of Torontonians' phones with increasing regularity. Often, these electronic ads arrive on a Friday or Saturday evening, when hip 20-somethings are likely to be planning the night ahead, maybe looking for a party.

Some who get these messages recall a promoter or doorman weeks ago taking down their number as they entered a club. Others say the promoter must have grabbed their cell number off a service like MSN Instant Messenger. Still more swear they are as protective of their cell numbers as they are of their bank PIN number, and steam about the way spam is spreading from e-mail to cellphones.

A few recipients say they don't mind; that they like to know about new events. But most respond like David Sieler, who complains he "can't stand them. They're so intrusive."

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association is fighting a difficult battle to keep thousands of would-be Internet-telephone spammers away from their prized, private cellular phone networks.

Meanwhile, small-scale promoters are using text-messaging in an attempt to invite thousands of people to club nights, yacht parties and bar openings across the GTA. Some of those messages, though wireless companies say the number is negligible, are sneaking through the filters.

Telus Mobility was hit by a wave of spam last month that sent unsolicited messages to almost 1 million phones, prompting the company to step up its filtering efforts and to promise customers they'll never have to pay for a spam message. Spam that isn't identified as such can cost a client as much as a dime per message on some plans.

"Incidents like (this) underline that spammers are relentless, requiring carriers to work hard to stay ahead of them," says Julia Quinton, a spokesperson for Telus. "We will," she vows.

Broad-based spam promoting things like dating services and mortgage refinancing can be detected and filtered out. But some is more local, and at that level wireless companies have a much harder time ferreting out spammers.

Sieler, 21, figures he gets unsolicited invitations to local venues like La Rouge and Steam Nite Club through his cellphone inbox "about twice a week, probably." He goes to clubs often, "but never to one of these things. I don't know where they're coming from."

He swears he has never given his phone number to anyone aside from friends, his employer and his parents. "I don't even give my e-mail address out online," he says. "I'm pretty private with my personal information."

But perhaps, like another 21-year-old party-goer who calls himself DJ El Kay Dee, it was an innocent phone call that landed his number on the lists.

"In August I got on the guest list for one night at The Docks," DJ writes on the message board at tranceaddict. com, complaining of repeated invites to various venues. "And when I called, I left my number (for them) to call back."

Marketers gathering numbers that way and sending out mass text messages are difficult to stop, says Marc Choma, of the telecommunications group. Nor can the association stop nightclub patrons from giving the door staff at some clubs a random cellphone number, so as to get a discount on drinks or bypass the lineup and the cover charge — which is how Sieler suspects a promoter got his number.

Some Toronto promotions companies, such as torontonightclub.com — which has been signing up club-goers for text message invitations on its website since the summer of 2003 — send invitations only to those who have voluntarily signed up online, providing their name and number and specifically asking to be told of events.

Richard De Souza, of torontonightclub.com, has gathered more than 1,200 cellphone numbers since his service opened, and he laments that the actions of "unscrupulous individuals" who send out text-message spam ruin the credibility of an otherwise legitimate marketing system.

"Everybody's getting these now," he says of the unsolicited messages, "and a lot of people are angry about them, and it detracts from what we're trying to do."

While text-message spam in Toronto hasn't become nearly the problem it is in Europe and Asia, says Choma, it's a constant race to keep ahead of would-be spammers who want to access cellular networks through the Internet.

"As soon as you put in one more step to block this, you're going to have someone on the opposing team who is coming up with new technologies to get around that," Choma says. "We know it's out there, a limited amount sneaks through, but as far as I know it hasn't become a major problem."
