Just one quick question. One time when my buddy was over, he saw that i had laid my headphones on the platter of one of my turntables. He said that the magnets within the platter could damage my headphones.
and why would magnets damage magnets (i mean your head phones)

There's magnets under 1200 and ttx platters, however, they're magnetically shielded. Another thing, if it will damage a pair of headphones, i would think it would damage the cartridge as well b/c it works on simular principle. Another thing, if there is a high magnetic field, it could also cause tracking problems b/c most phono cartridges have metal bodies causing them to be pulled twords the magnet on the platter.
This myth doesn't add up and is most likely false.

Sounds like BS, I don't really get how a magnet would mess up headphones. Perhaps the theory is that something will happen to the magnets in the cans but it does not make much sense to me.

Now we need to find out how high of a magnetic field that will kill a standard pair of headphones.... we need a big electromagnet....

The magnets in your turntable are shielded. If they weren't you couldn't have turntables next to computer monitors or near electronics like cell phones without interference.

on that note however, can your magnets in the headphone do damage to the mixer's components?
i was always told it will if you like to leave your headphones on your mixer, which is why i always put my phones on the platter
There's no part i can think of on a mixer that will get damaged by magnets in your headphones. The only devices i can think of that will get screwed up are floppy disks and monitors (tvs, etc)
