now just to get this clear... i performed a search as was unable to find what i was looking for.... so... that being said

here is my situation:

i have a laptop... a decent laptop... toshiba satelite 2400 (2002 model)
i have decks and a mixer with a "booth out"
i would like to back up (record) my vinyls on my harddrive so i can make a cd out of them and while im in the car i can really get to know the tracks, make mix cds etc etc... i would like to be able to have them in wav and mp3 formats...

so.... what hardware/software do i need given that i do not have USB 2.0 ... i have usb 1.0 ... i do have card insert slots...

also include any other tips as far as the recording onto the computer procedure is concerned

get one of those and plug it in from your mixer master output to your computer line in. then get a program that records to wav or mp3 and then mix away

A really good FREE program i use is Audacity.

It's for windows, mac, and linux.

You may also want to look into getting a better soundcard.

For notebooks, the Echo Indigo series are suppose to be great

I can get one from my record store, but have only heard one persons opinion of it (was recommended). I have a good computer, but it has an inbuilt soundcard, and I want really good recording sound quality. I realise this is just for recording (which make me think such a specialised thing is gonna be pretty decent) and I don't need really good playback (use a different computer for playback).

Any other ideas for good (preferably external) souncards?

Sorry nutter, never seen or heard of that before. Here's what i really want for mobile recording/production:

M-Audio Ozone

It has a 2x2 24/96 ASIO 2.0 support audio interface built in as well as full midi support. I believe it can also be usb bus powered so no wall-wart for road use. I know BT used this piece of equipment along w/ Ableton Live, and his headphones as a microphone when he recorded the train samples and vocals on his song "Paris" from Emotional Technology while he was on the Eurorail.

If you don't have USB2 support, check out this cool PC Card from Creative.

Audigy2 ZS Notebook

I have been using Creative soundcards for years and they do a great job at recording. I actually use their USB2 Audigy card for recording on my laptop and it's great. Usually their equipment isn't too expensive, either.
