hi

i've read a lot of threads on here about doing remixes and i just want to clarify the procedure. From what I've gathered, it is something like this:

1) contact the copyright owner of the original
2) contact the record company who released the original
3) they will send the remix pack.
4) you do the remix
5) if you like it and they like it, they will release it and give you a percentage of the profits.

This is right, no?

im sure they dont just give it out to anyone. otherwise they would get inundated.

yeah, it's more likely you get asked to do a certain remix. You can still just go around and bootleg it, but the chance of it getting released is pretty much....next to nothing. And I don't think labels/artist will send out their precious intellectual capital to just anyone.

Record label comissions you to do a remix- you get paid if they use it (or you get a percentage up front, then the balance if they use it which happens a lot) If they dont like it, tough.

If you are lucky and bootleg something and release it on white, they might offer you some remix work, or officially comission your remix- or they may just sue you and issue you with a destruction order for all copies.
And take your house.

Or you could do like many remixers do when they first start out... Use a wave editor, break the song down into some (read: a lot) of sampels and then use some type of sequencer and a sampler. Its not impossible if you know what you are doing. If you want to try this, I'd recomend Adobe Audition and some tpye of program where you can sequence sounds and such. FLStudio is my preferred choice but many other programs coudl work as well like Sonar or even better (if you can stand the shitty layout) Reason 2.5 with its awesome sampler or I'm sure you can do it in the other 2 big name programs, Cubase and Logic, but I've used neither to remix. Then add in your extra synths and new bassline/melody whatever. Good luck and have fun.

P.S. One last note, dont do your first remix expecting it to be amazing or be a big hit. Do several expecting them to be nothing more than shit and work at it. Also, don't expect to make any money liek this either. As was previously said, generally you need to be asked by a label or an artist to remix a song but you have to start somewhere.
