Insight to getting signed

Does anyone have any insight to how people go about getting their tracks signed to labels? Knowing people obviously helps but what else can you do? Thanks.

Send out demos. Go out to parties and hand out CD's.

Be active. It's the real life where it happens, not the internet. It won't happen overnight either.
