This is true, and what's more, "commercial" trance loathed so it is, sometimes plays an important although breif role in introducing people to music of the greater integrity which we enjoy these days (well, some of us who remain unjaded do).
Kind of like how "Robert Miles - Children" gave me chills years ago when I was still playing in a Rock/Metal band. It was powerful and emotive music, just like some Metal.
I deliberately don't have a cd player in my car or have any stations preset so I scan through and listen very widely to all sorts of music, even ethnic, classical, metal, classic rock, pop, and of course wicked electronic when it's on!
So I was scanning away and I heard a remix of "belinda carslile - summer rain" and it occured to me how nice the production quality was, but how nauseating the melody was.. then it occurred to me that most noobs need education about good trance, but unless they have someone to put them on the right track, or some radio cheese to break them in, they have little chance..
This theory would also explain the proliferation of "one love" style bubblegum house... catchy motifs = radio support = exposure, and this unltimately will benefit the scene. Like it or not.
