There's the Berklee school of music which uses Reason and there's various producing schools in Europe.

Agreed, you should check out technical schools and things like that or if local studios have some sort of tutoring thing.

fuck the schools. why not learn it yourself? nearly all the people in the production forum are entirely self taught, bedroom musicians. and many of them are pretty damn good. im self taught for about 15 months. not doing too badly considering i have no formal music training, nearly failed a-level math and consequently was refused entry to do acoustic engineering at southampton university. all the engineering i do for my tracks is all self taught and learned from people on the net wiling to take the time out to answer questions on forums like this one or gracious enough to write up a tutorial about it.

and besides. take a look at dj sammy. he has formal qualifications and look at the shit he produces...

You'll also find without formal training you get alot more respect learning to do something (especially if it's something difficult) by yourself than getting tought my brother. Also somewhat easier to explore and discover new things, alot of the time with teachers what they say goes.

Agreed you can self teach your self. But for me its more of a issue of casualness. Example, a person with a club membership to a gym will be more likely to work out more then if he had a home gym.

i suppose. but heck i dont do this because i have to. i do it cuz i love it. and if you ask some of the people on the production forum why they do it they'll give similar answers. and i think given time and effort, that will show in the songs we write. and it shows in some of the songs ive heard from the people on this forum. more so than it does on the 101 generic trancers that hit juno every month. and thats the first reason why anyone should write music. i dont think of it like a gym membership. i dont really produce casually either. its a life consuming hobby. if you are in the frame of mind where you are doing it because your tutors are making you do it then theres no feeling in what you write. you'll be doing it because you have to. not because you want to. and you should question why exactly you chose to embark on this road from the start. you are just picking up credits to float along on your course. and thats a shit frame of mind to be in when you are creating something.

the market is already flooded with boring, 'only does enough to get the job done' kind of tunes as it is. it doesnt need anymore half hearted tunes by half arsed producers who cooked up a song because they had to.

i mean i saw this advert for a digital media assistant course and there was this producer who basically did a foundation course in music tech and had access to a load of gear (like a real CS-80) that i would just die to get my hands on. he produced music for this advert and they basically showed what goes on with digital media assistants. only the stuff he wrote was boring, uninspired shit. he was falling back on technical bullshit which he learnt on his course and the result was complex but ultimately a soulless peice of shit for a more than likely equally soulless product.

this is exactly my problem with the likes of mr dj supastar sammy. all that expertise and the half arsed tripe he comes up with at the end of all that?

sorry if this sounds rather fiery - i sometimes get over passionate about stuff like this hope you dont take it the wrong way.

Music theory at least is a important thing to learn. That will give you a much better understanding of music and creating it. So if you go to school for music production, al least take a intro theory class. (it's a pain in the ass to learn but worth it btw)
