There's a saying that goes, "he who enters a pope leaves a cardinal". It's impossible to predict really, since the Cardinals are always so mum about it. And since the media has been around, they've proved quite inept at predicting who will be chosen.

There's also a saying that goes something like..."he who enters the boy becomes a cardinal"

Theoretically it is possible... the only requirement to be pope is that you are catholic.... you don't even need to be Roman Catholic. That being said, the chances of 117 old clergymen chosing someone other than one of their own to lead them are nearly non-existant.

Theoretically it isnt possible according to canon law to elect a women pope.........
It lists three classes that would be immeaditaly null and void if elected, and these are.......
1.A heretic
2.A schismatic(a member of a faction or seceded branch of a church)
3.A female
Although it is possible for a layman and even a married man to be elected pope, the pope used to have to be a cardinal up to the 12th century, before he could be elected......but nowadays the pope is elected by cardinals,he doesnt have to be nescessarily a cardinal to be elected pope.....
There is a legend in the catholic church of a women pope, pope joan, but this appears to be only a legend as their is no historical evidence to back this up.......but this legend was used by George Smileys mates the Prods to thwart catholics throughout the middle ages..........
