For your price range, I reckon go for the Denon DNS-4000 Dual CD Player ($600 at topdecks.com)
-0.1% pitch accuracy
-Looping
-Hot Starts
-Pitch bend buttons in addition to a jog wheel
or you can go for the more expensive Pioneer CMX-1000 Dual CD Player for these additional features:
-0.5% pitch accuracy (as good as the CDJ-800)
-A limited scratch effect, so you can at least backspin on them if -Wave display
IMO, stay away from the Pioneer CDJ-100s, their very basic and overpriced, and you'll outgrow them very quickly and have to upgrade again. At least with these dual players, you can do loops, hot starts etc should keep you entertained for longer, plus they got the pitch bend buttons which are VERY handy (jog wheel suck for correcting songs!) If your deadset on going for single units, your options other than the CDJ-100 are the CDJ-200, the denon DNS-1000, the vestax CDX-05, or numark Axis 9 but i think they would be well out of your price range.
Both of the dual units I mentioned before are quality, so its not like your buying bottom-of-the-range cheap dodgy equipment. If you can afford it, go for the Pioneer CMX-3000 over the denon, seeing as the pitch resolution is 0.05% over the denon's 0.1% - lots more adjusting needed while your mixing trance/dance with 0.1%.
As for a mixer? Easy choice - go for the Numark DXM06
-2 channel mixer
-Effects (6 or 12 of them I think)
-Much better quality than other 2 channel non-battle mixers like the pioneer mixers
-Cheap, excellent value for money
If I could start out again that would be the setup I'd get. Good luck mate!
