Is this legal?

Alright, I have some issues of Funkymix on vinyl. I do some mobile DJing and I don't like to carry vinyl around so I usually use CDs, but these issues are rare and I could only find them on vinyl. However, I have downloaded CD rips of these same issues. I would rather use the CD rips as they are higher quality than me recording the vinyl to CDR. Is it legal for me to play these CD rips as long as I own the vinyl?

Thanks
DJK

I think as long as you claim you ripped the CDs from the vinyls you own, you'll be alright. But I'm just making a logical guess.

Thanks for the replies guys, but I need more than just an "I think" - I really don't wanna be fined for doing something illegal, especially when I don't know it's illegal.

If anyone can confirm that it's okay by copyright law or something that would be great!

Owning a digital copy of a vinyl record you have is alright. It's like making a cassette tape copy of a CD you own so you can listen to it in you're car cassette deck (if any car still comes with one). You bought the track - you've supported the artist. All you've done is change the format.

Have seen this a few times.
The way I had it explained to me is this.

No it's not legal from a technical point of view, as you have infringed upon copyright law by actually playing a duplicate of a CD that you in fact don't own, and if they wanted to be really nit picky they could prove this and take you to court.

However, as you actually own a copy of this recording, you are not the target group that they are looking to prosecute as you are not preventing the creators (and more so record company) from being paid.

Cheers
Nem

Alright, makes sense to me. I don't suppose anyone will be that picky if I'm just doing mobile gigs

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Hypothetical:

A vinyl DJ who has been spinning for years decides to make the switch to CDs and buys some Pioneer CDJs. They copy their ENTIRE collection of vinyl to CDs and sell all their vinyl for a tidy profit.

LEGAL?

Now that IS illegal.
The original scenario isnt (technically) as you still own an original copy.
If you sell it you are then in breach of copyright.
