Question regarding Maire's vocals on Chicane's "Saltwater"
I'm aware that the anchor vocals by Maire (Moya) Brennan were sampled from Clannad's "Harry's Game", but anyone that has listened to this song will notice that there are more lyrics than the "Fol lol the doh fol the day" that do not appear in "Harry's Game". I'm wondering if the other lyrics (i.e. Open my eyes, saltwater rain...) were sung by Maire for Chicane, or if these were sampled from another song. I haven't found any other song by Moya with these lyrics.
Here are the full lyrics:
"Oscail mo shúile
Nìos mò
Èist è sin
Ar an tsáile snámha
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Open my eyes
Saltwater rain
Oscail mo shúil
In that way
Èist tù
In that way
Èist tù
In that way
Missing part
In that way
Èist tù
Oscail mo shùil
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Fol lol the doh fol the day
Open my eyes
Saltwater rain
Oscail mo shùil
No more inside
Saltwater rain
Oscail mo shùil"
If much of this is original to chicane's song, with Maire on the vocals, this would qualify her as an actual trance vocalist.

afaik, chicane first made a version where he sampled the vocals directly from the original clannad track. and i think when trying to clear the use of the vocals, maire offered to re-record the vocals.

It's not technically a sample. A sample is a sound lifted directly from another track. This is an element from another track but it has been recreated for Saltwater, rather than part of an actual recording. Producers do this a lot, as it saves them having to pay sample royalties. It's not a full cover so they still get writing credits (ie money) and they aren't directly sampling it. The Prodigy did this with Voodoo People- the guitar riff is taken from Nirvana's Very Ape but they recorded it live in the studio, rather than sampling it.
System-J, thanks for the clarification that this is a re-recording (I do know what a sample is). However, it doesn't exactly answer my question about the extra vocals that are not found in "Harry's Game". I would assume then that these were sung for Chicane's song, making Maire an actual trance vocalist.

I disagree. Contributing to one track rooted in a sample doesn't make you a trance vocalist. I don't think Maire has contributed to any other trance records, or is part of a trance act, so it is not accurate to say she is a trance vocalist.
Contributing original vocal content to a trance song production would make the singer qualify as a trance vocalist, even if it has only been done for one song.
Again, you're forgetting that the anchor lyrics from "Harry's Game" are not the only vocals that appear in Saltwater. There are original lyrics, vocals and melody in the song.

Is George Clinton a house vocalist because he provided original vocal samples for Elementalelectrofunk?

Yes, but it is one song. That doesn't make someone a trance vocalist. Sarah Mclachlan is not a trance vocalist either.

Sarah's vocals were only sampled, so no, she isn't. She contributed nothing original or intentional for trance.
There has to be a criteria.

I see you're as argumentative as always.
Oh, and the word you're looking for is criterion.

Trust me buddy, correcting me in matters of grammatical accuracy is tantamount to a tumbleweed telling a redwood how to stand straight. Criteria can work just as well in the singular.
And seeing you already think I'm argumentative, I couldn't disappoint you.

i think someone should ask her to do more trance vocal songs. her voice is heavenly..some of the other vocalists pale compared to her.
