Unhappy Windows Help PLEASE!

I have a friend who had an HP desktop, I have built her a new computer, and would like to use the Windows XP Home edition license from her HP on the new PC. A totally legit license transfer (since technically it isn't leaving her posession) However HP doesn't give you a Windows Disc, you cannot use the Recovery CD's on another machine, and the Win XP Home disc that I downloaded isn't accepting her product key

If anyone knows what I can do to make this work (How to make a cd that will work with the PKey?) I would be most grateful

Thanks.

lol, I would totally do that (as usual) but I don't want her to run into any prob.s if (when) MSFT implements the infamous Windows Genuine Advantage (i.e. Validation) for updates And no, Linux / Unix != an option.

I think you can just call windows and get a new activation code. I'm not positive though.

Activation isn't the issue, it's the fact that a regular Windows Home Edition (OEM) CD doesn't accept teh product key I think that HP has it's own PID scheme, but I don't know what it is / how it works <- Again *cry*

My understanding is that you are buying a computer that just so happens to include a custom, preinstalled version of windows, that is still governed by Microsoft's EULA (Which I don't think they would willingly lose control of) therefore, it should be transferrable... I'm thinking of calling MSFT Tech Support, weaseling my way to a person (since they direct tech calls for HP etc. TO HP etc.) and asking them...

wait...can you run any command lines?

so like the regular fckgw ish isnt working, but ...

so you get into HP activator and it says invalid HP key?

why dont you make it a slave drive on your working computer, format it, and then put it back in and install windows into your HP box without it having HP shit on it
