The World Trade Organization eased open its door to Iran on Thursday — an immediate reward for Tehran's decision to stick with talks Europe hopes will reduce Tehran's potential for nuclear mischief.
Iran was jubilant over the decision by the 148-member WTO in Geneva, which governs international commerce, to open membership negotiations with Tehran.
"Today this house with this decision has done service to itself by correcting a wrong," said Mohammad Reza Alborzi, Iran's chief representative to international organizations in Geneva.
But Iran still insists on the right to technology that can make nuclear arms. Its decision Wednesday to meet with European Union negotiators for a new round of talks in the summer thus did little more than postpone a diplomatic struggle over Iran's vow to resume programs capable of producing nuclear weapons. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050526...ea/iran_nuclear
What is the probability that Iran is just doing this to get nuclear arms? If so, what would they need the UN for after they have them?

Iran has a choice: peace and prosperity, or war.

From what I've seen in the middle east, the obvious answer to that choice isn't as clear cut as a Western mind might think.

Bush had been supportive of EU engagement policy with Iran.
WTO only cleared Iran for talks after US withdrew their 10 year objection.
Let's hope Iran trust the West and allow in IAEA for thorough nuclear inspection.
It is all about trust; once and if that is broken, US is going to destory their plants.
Anyway, US is too engaged with Iraq, so give diplomacy a chance with Iran.
Lets hope Iran does a Libya.

It won't, for one simple reason.
Iran doesn't recognize the right of Israel to exist. Because of that, israel needs nukes. Because of THAT, Iran thinks that it needs nukes.

You think Iran would nuke Israel?
And thats besides the point, you're just assuming Iran wants nukes cos thats what you have been told to believe...has it ever occured to you that Iran wants nuclear power stations to generate electricity...like they say?

You don't need 90% enriched uranium to run a power plant.. 10% is plenty. You don't need a cascade centrifuge set-up for generating power. Clearly, they want weapons-grade uranium.
Iran also has vast oil and gas reserves.. what's the rush to nuclear?

Isreal has them,I dont see why Iran cant.
The difference: Israel accepts Iran's right to exist, but Iran doesn't accept Israel's right to exist.

And that, translated into your head, means that Iran would nuke Israel even tho in doing so it would wipe itself out?
Did it ever occur to you that no country in the Muslim world has the aim of "destroying" Israel as there is no chance any of them could? Do you understand the concept of legitimacy in the Muslim world and why it is so important? And do you know what kind of rhetoric regimes use to legitimise themselves?

Then why is Iran not allowing IAEA for a complete inspection? What is there to hide?
The problem arose when Iran limited IAEA inspection.
