You know its true. Felt the need to rant. To newbies if you want to get fame try getting a guitar. Right now theirs more people matching beats then strumming chords. And if you have no musical ability, play emo.

haha, its funny cos its true, when I lived in england, the last year I was there was when it seemed to get out of control with everyone being a DJ, and DJ equipment was a popular item on most kids christmas list, it was just to crazy, you could throw a rock into a crowd and you'd be guarenteed to hit a DJ.

Well, in central Pennsylvania, that really doesn't apply. There are emo/punk/metal bands everywhere and everyone who is into music that I know of seems to play the guitar or is in one of those damn bands with their friends. The music scene is very saturated with punk shit and as a dance music listener, it is quite frustrating at how there is no musical variety where I live. Even rap and r&b seem to take a back seat to punk, except around the city of Harrisburg where hip-hop has more of a following. I know a few people who are into dance music, but none of them dj like I do and other than the local club dj's, I haven't met any people who dj in and around my age although I have met a few dj's older than me. However, none spin dance music. I'd say over in Europe that might be the case, but everyone plays the guitar around here. I do agree though about your comment on musical ability and emo, or as I like to say "emu" music.

the more people out there having a go means the future should be brighter. for every 1000 ppl like myself wanting to have a bit of fun, there might be the next sasha. a certain level of interest in the scene is a good thing imo.

It's the same in every genre of music - yes, if you go out clubbing the chances are maybe at least half of the people in the crowd have got decks and like having a mix, some more serious than others

But think about how many people out of the crowd at a rock/punk/metal concert play the guitar. And certain comparisons can be drawn - like at a Metallica concert just about everyone in the crowd will own a guitar, where as for a Coldplay gig it'll be a hell of a lot less, in the same way that there will probably be more people who own decks at a night at Godskitchen that at Hed Kandi or something.

Then think of the number of people who listen to drum and bass who think they're the next Skibadee.

Today while record shopping, there were a bunch of guys all digging in the hiphop/breaks bin. I saw two in the group each buy 2 copies of the same record. So these two guys who seem to be friends buy pairs of the exactly same battle record. To me thats funny b/c i think they don't want to be origional, they wanna be the same. To me there's nothing wrong with hiphop and turntablism. Lately i've been into that too, but i was the only one at the store that actually tried to find good samples and breaks to use by digging in jazz, gospel, classic rock, gospel, and other dirty used bins. I think it's fun and more rewarding to find samples that nobody else has. Cookie cutter djs are all around the place in all styles and genres. IMO it's fun to do stuff that shouldn't be correct but different. Or maybe it's DJ Shadow and Z-trip that's rubbing off on me.

But the to the main point, Everyone is a dj. I just want to be a drummer. :P

haha, very true that. But it does seem to be like a natural progression if you are really into music, to get more involved in it by either producing or spinning
