i am recording some mixes that im doind to my computer from my mixer and i am getting some horrible sound quality out of it. i have ortofon cartriges, technics tables and a djm-500 mixer. so i am pretty sure that is not the problem. but i am using a program called audioicty. not sure if this is a good one or not but it is distorted and skips. for it not to be distorted i ahve to have the master on leval 2 on my mixer. not very loud. anything higher than that it is destorted. does anyone have any ideas

Don't you use the Mic-in instead of the Line-in?

i have my set up where it goes from the mixer to a box of some sort and then it goes to the computer with a USB cable. the box has a couple of dials on it and i have messed with them and have it set good but it still cant be loud.

what is this box you speak of?

the box is propably a DI...

though try to adjust your gain of the output on the mixer or in windows control panel or anywhere

your problem might be because the level of the volume coming into the computer is way too high so it clips (distorts) when you decrease the level acurately so your peaks won't go to the red part of VU meter you will get a nice sound...

also you might want to aply some normalizing or maximizing to bring it to a more solid level.

Though decreasing gain of the input is only thing which comes to my mind to solve your problem...I think Audacity should be no problem really.

btw
the DI can make your gain higher (so level 2 on your mixer doesn't mean anything) try to lower it in windows mixer

(btw I may be totally off I didn't read your post that carefully as I do now realizing that I write something you propably know about)

i had a problem kinda similar to this using Audacity, turned out to be the microphone! i had ma mixer plugged into the line-in and the mic input was turned up in the settings, so it was pickin up loadsa interferance fae the mic!

using goldwave i've had issues recording.

During a lot of the breakdowns in the songs (it may be at other times you just can't hear it) there is a slight sort of popping noise. When i listen to it through an MD recording its not there, its only when i listen to the recording on the computer.

Do you think it could be something to do with the cables?

And my equipment is a DJM 600 a Technics turntable and CDJ 1000.

in windows mixer mute devices like CD (From Audio in from your CD rom) and microphone in. Both of these can produce lots of noises

normally a di box lowers your signal because you go from a sym. connection to a asym. connection.

set your mixer output to 0db piek (not in the red), then put it in the line-in of the computer. Check your computer setting of the input gain. Modulate your signal when you have a nice loud (not clipping) level. you can test-record for a couple of times.
