Okay, so I'm at my friend's house right now. My computer overheated yesterday and wouldn't turn back on. We figured out the power supply went to shit and replaced it with an old one out of one of our other computers. However, now when we boot the computer up, it gets to the Windows XP logo screen and after that it goes to a black screen and stays there.

Any idea what's going on?

troubleshoot. try swapping out a hard drive that has an OS installed on it, boot from it. if that doesnt fix it, then your choices are narrowed to the cpu/mobo, or possibly the psu isnt kicking out enough juice to run what you're trying to run?

Well, it wasn't turning on for an entire day. I've had it overheat before, it's not a regular overheating problem, and if you're implying I totally fucked the CPU, I don't think the computer would even boot if I blew that.

1. i was just kidding
2. you'd get better help on a computer hardware board.
3. if your system is overheating on a regular basis any component could be damaged. You're probably right its not the cpu.
4. the important question is why is your pc overheating? are you overclocking?
5. you can't expect psu from an older pc to work because it might not offer enough power.
6. it could be software related, when the psu went down, a file necessary for xp to boot could have been corrupted by a sudden shut down. in this case you would need to move your data off the drive and reinstall.

ermm since it makes it to the xp screen, there is a little chance anything is burned...

the psu may be casuing some problems with your xp??

anyhoo, run it in safe mode, if it still won't work, try safe mode with command line.. then youll see what is fucking up the windoze...
