Question should i keep trying

i've been messing around with Reason 3 for a few weeks (i never used another producing program before) and i realy like it, though i think my first atempts suck big time. so, im posting a realy basic sample of what i did yesterday for you to listen. should i keep trying to improve and work harder on some full lenght tracks or i'm just too bad and i'll never produce quality stuff even if i practice and practice and practice? how did you sounded when you started out?

link

work on, try to create as much full length tracks as you can, you will get better in time

as you said, it's all about practice practice and practice, and be prepared that it will take some time before you get good, just remember the fun part in it, if you aren't having fun while producing it's not worth working on with it

Dont worry if what you do in the beginning is not what you want to hear, just keep writing and writing, and in time you will become better. Listen to tracks you like and try to analyze them: how is the bass, the drums etc an try to recreate this in your songs. Of course jsut the basics, you dont want to copy popular artists, but imitation will make you learn very fast

Good choice using Reason. Don't worry if your music doesn't sound as good as you would like it to, I felt the same way as you. Give it time, once you get the foundation down, the rest is just experimenting!

You've been producing for a few weeks and you say you should stop? That's a bit crazy.

I think it's a lil' unrealistic that you should find your self doing quality work in weeks. Heck it took me like 3 weeks to complete my first serious track. *still came out shitty too *

If you want to produce, you should work work work, practice practice practice and have lots of patience^3. Learn the mistakes of your first track and then improve them on your next and don't set the bar too high too quick.. you might burn out earily.

Think about this:

1. Am I ready to waste a shit load of my time and many years trying to learn how to produce good music...because it takes a long time!

2. Am I really ready to waste many years of my life trying to get things right when I could be doing other things.

3. If I die in 5 years and haven't released a tune but my stuff was getting really good and I really enjoyed doing it...would I be happy?

Some of this stuff may sound extreme but I'm telling you this is what happens.

think it over before you come to the darkside!

well spoken, it sounds dramatic but it's true, and that could be considered sad now that I come to think of it

ohh and I might add another one to that:

4. Are you ready to become a perfectionist at the cost of not being able to just listen to a track without analyzing it to it's fullest. That will happen if you really get into producing and it's not always a good thing...

I agree with no.4 but its a blessing and a curse. My taste in music has changed since producing, and some tracks i can enjoy more because of the added appreciation of the production, whilst other tracks which i may have liked before i now don't.

And djsphere, 3 weeks is absolutely NOTHING in production time. I'd say take it easy, and enjoy it while its still new, and the possibilites seem endless. If you were making really good quality music after 3 weeks, THEN i'd we worried.

Imagine darkness so intense and so complete covering you like a velvet blanket. A blackness that cuts you off from the everyday world, forcing you to draw deep into yourself, a blackness that makes you see with your heart instead of your eyes. You can't see, but your eyes seem open. You are isolated, but you know you are united with all living things. And out of darkness comes the roaring of the drums, the sound of the prayers. And among these sounds your ears catch the voices of the spirits, ghostlike, whispering to you from unseen lips. You feel the wings of birds brushing your face; feel the light touch of a feather on your skin. And always you hear the throbbing drums filling the empty space inside yourself, making you forget things that clutter your mind, making your body sway to their rhythm

I'm in the learning stage too, and I think the best way to go about it is, don't try to "make a song" now. Learn the program, learn how to make sounds, and don't worry about putting a whole song together. That's what I'm trying to do, just get a feel for all the different things you can do. Remember, Ibiza wasnt built in a day
