Honestly Jay, even if CNN is blowing this out of proportion (and really, isn't that the job of every journalist?), you can't say that we didn't do anything to deserve this negative attention. Maybe the Avian flu isn't killing millions of people, but that doesn't change the fact that we'd be completely unprepared for an outbreak if it did happen.
The Canadian response to SARS would have been funny if it wasn't so tragic and infuriating. Maybe it was only 50 deaths or something like that, but that's 50 more deaths than there were in the USA and significantly more than there were in China where the outbreak actually started.
A month or so ago we couldn't even identify an outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease. It's usually a matter of hours before that's isolated from the ventilation system in a U.S. hospital.
Government-controlled health care needs to die, and frankly, I think the more negative attention Canada's health care system gets, the better off we'll be in the end. At the very least, there will be a few less Democrats walking around in the U.S. thinking that we have superior health care, so they'll be less inclined to screw up their own system in an attempt to make it more like Canada's, and if I ever get terminally ill I can take comfort in knowing that I can get proper treatment across the border by using the private health insurance that I work every day to pay for.
