usually try to get FAIR TRADE coffee and second to that, organic/shade grown etc. i buy whole bean and frnch press at home, so here are some of my fav roasters and roasts.
at whole foods, allegro coffees are pretty good. whole foods organix blend is a blens of light and dark roasts and presses nicely. for a more pungent taste, the sumatra blue batak is wicked.
in NYC i was just turned on to porto rico coffee roasters... i got a cup last time i was in town and had to take home a couple pounds.
my fav roaster in the US (so far) is called larry's beans, located in raliegh, NC. all organic and faily traded and wow its good.
if i have to go to starbux, i will, and the one thing they do well is espresso. grande americano with room for cream pls. outside of cafe verona i try to avoid their roasts and blends as they all taste burnt.
a smaller chain that i do like is caribou coffee. and in FL barnie's is ok. and Austin's in Orlando is good for their lighter roasts.
lastly, there is a wicked place in charlottesville VA called the mudhouse. its always a good cup.
rule of thumb: local coffeehouses are almost always better than the chains. oh, and dunkin donuts coffee has crack or meth or somthing in it.
thats off the top of my head, but i make it a point to seek out local flavor coffee wherever i go, so i could probably list a dozen more that i like if i had time...
=)
