Actually Live 5 converts the mp3s to wav, in version 4 you can't even see mp3s in the browser. It's not that bad though, a 60 min mix you would need about 6-700MB. I use Live 5 to record mixes from my decks, and I still need the same amount of disk space to do that. I am pretty sure most programs handle audio as .wav or some other uncompressed format, as the overhead on doing real-time effects and decompression algorithms on the fly is a waste.
I would much rather sacrifice disk space over throughput any day. Storage is really cheap these days.

i have 5... i was just wondering if there was a no 'fx' type session i could use for generic mixes. but then again, i guess i'd still be using EQ3 as an fx.
here's an interesting question.
will a 192 MP3 converted to wav be the same disc space as a 320 mp3 converted to wav?

i never knew that mp3's get converted to wav. i reckon it's just a temporary thing since i haven't noticed my disk space go berserk. i've never even noticed anywhere on the gui saying how much space is needed for the current session.

It is temporary, under Windows it goes in the same place as any samples you record. If you remove the clip from the audio track it will ask whether or not you want to delete unused samples when you want to close the track. If you leave it in the track it will stay in the temp folder I think.
