REVIEW: NYE @ Guv

wow...no Guv review thread?

maybe because there were no TA's to be found anywhere...In the last two years, I've *never* gone to a party at Guv, Docks or System and NOT seen ANY TAs who I know or at least recognize...weird.

got there sometime between 12:30 and 1:00am, walked right in with no lineup at the door or coat check...yay for starting the night off at a house party.

Mark Oliver was alright, but nothing mind blowing...Sydney was playing some good stuff in the lounge, but it was really hot in there...so it was off to the Orange Room for Nathan Barrato and Deko-ze who both dropped great sets.

highs: Deko-ze dropped a cool little breakz track I bought on vinyl a little while ago, "Gonna Be Big", that I never expected to hear out...very nice He was easily the highlight among the DJs on the night...big energy, having a blast behind the decks...truly one of the best locals in the city and one of the best live DJs I've seen period. We're lucky to have him here!

lows: virtually no trance. WTF. Mark's set was good...but I expected a bit more on NYE...isn't this the time to pull out all the stops, drop some of the year's big tunes, etc? I rarely hear a "bad" set from him, but this one was rather uninspiring...though certainly had it's fun moments. Where's the trance though?

I also didn't need to hear that f**king Madonna "Hung Up" track 3 or 4 times througout the night, twice in the same room. FFS...enough already...THE TRACK JUST ISN'T THAT GREAT!!! Good for MO for playing the original ABBA song at some point though, lol, and for Deko-ze for playing a better track from her album at some point.

Crowd was decent, no linups, no drama...had a great group of friends there...all in all a good night, but nothing out of the ordinary for Guv, so I kind of regret missing Dumonde, but Deko-ze and Barrato easily made up for choosing Guv for NYE.

So who actually went to Guv?!? I honestly saw NO familiar faces or TAs at all...?

edit: highlight #2, that I didn't have the pleasure of witnessing firsthand, was chrismack being aggressively pursued by some sketchbag to the point that this clown followed him into a bathroom and pushed his way into the stall with him...WTF!?! LOL @ people who really can't handle their drugs And Chris was even nice enough to politely remove him instead of clocking him...and even helped the guy get back to his friends because he was so sketched out that he could barely walk. good karma, I guess

Yah...Guv review...

Got there at 9:30....Not alot of ppl in line...maybe 1000 in the whole complex...

But at 11, I heard from ppl that it was crazy outside...Why do ppl show up so late at a special event like NYE???

I thought Mark played a typically great set and a 12 hour one at that...A lil bit o trance in there but we all know that MO has gotten a little harder in his style over the years and the only true trance set is played at the Gift every december...He did throw in a few great trance tracks which made me just stare at the lasers and feel the music...9-12 hrs on the decks...Name me 5 DJ's in the world who do that on a regular basis...

Only ventured into the Orange room for a few minutes to say hi to Dekoze but didn't stay...And I'm regretting it...Also upset I didn't see Nathan Barato...

I'm sure that Sydney Blue was incredible but again, I only ventured in there for about 10 minutes and it was too cold so I went back to the warmth of the mainroom...

The Drink with Manzone and Strong, and Addy was a blast...Those guys are phenomenal...

All in all, a great party with absolutely no big problems...

oops...I guess it's detox time

There really needs to be more substantial, deterring consequences from weekends such as this one (um, aside from acute memory loss it seems, lol)...I feel great today!

I came from the states to spend NYE in Canada

my NYE sucked until about 10pm the night of, when Shaya came and scooped me up from Yorkdale... got me into the Guv... took my coat for me... gave me drink tickets and sent me on my merry way. I didn't know a soul there, cept for Shaya [never ran back into him, as you could imagine] but I had such an amazing time. Mark Oliver rocked my world.. I was sooo fucking excited that the night didn't turn into a trancefest

but yes, thanks you Shaya.. I had such a rememberable night/morning when I honestly thought I would be chillin' on the couch all night.

I met a kick ass group of people, dancing my ass off til 8am.. then they helped me find a bus to get me back home. I wish I got their numbers, oh well.. I love this city

thank you x23544

I don't know what's up with Mark Oliver lately. I don't know if he is trying to end his career or something? Whatever it is, he's going to kill the club if he keeps this up much longer....

When he goes off on one of his little rants (I don't even know what to call the horseshit he is playing lately) nobody is happy, they all start chatting, and there's no energy in the place. He will start to get some energy back with a couple of great tracks, then he'll piss all over it, and go right back into this crap.

Mark! WTF??? What are you doing???

I think you have Tunnel Trance Vision Syndrome...It was a Great night, and the crowd was lovin' every minute of it! Videos and pics are the testament to that...NOT THE HORSESHIT you just wrote in here...

Thanks for comin' out!

ladies and gentlemen....

Mark Oliver has never been a "TRANCE" dj....he never sticks to ANY one genre....but haven't we been over this like 2 hundred times????

Bottom line is...he's good at what at he does. I decided to not spend New Years at guv simply cuz i needed some family time this year. Best decision I ever made. I love guv and go there 70 percent of the weekends in a year Mark will rock my world one of those wknds....

Good on Guvy and the whole crew for putting together another solid year (best one yet)...

see you in 2006

A little over the top...yes there wasn't any trance played (at least while I was there) but to call it horseshit - a little dramatic don't you think?

Would have liked there to be an hour or two or big, epic trance...but the set, tracks were still very good.
