Personally I love that idea. Just have to get the forum moderators to like this idea also :P

Sounds like a great idea, I'm not in charge though.
Presumably what you're suggesting is maybe a "patch thread"? Sort of a master list of patches, annotated with the names of some popular tracks they were used in? In a way I'm afraid of what that could lead to (5000 remixes of Tiesto's "traffic") but then again, people are going to find out anyway, so maybe it would be a good idea.
Patches tend to be pretty small, so I could host them and keep the thread updated. We'll have to see if other people here think that would be good to have - because you're right, there are a lot of "how do I make this sound" questions. |
yeah, maybe with each month it gets more difficult... so its not just a bassline we're recreating but maybe the stab synth too or whatever.
but for the first few, lets just do 1 sound. i think when we get to the percussion stuff is when the fun part comes in!
i don't really know the mod's, think you can ask them?
edit:
what if, we set 1 song per month....
first week: melody & lead
second week: bassline & mids
third week: fx
fourth week: percussion
that seems more thought out

Makes sense. I think it would be best served by having one master list (if not stickied then I'll link to it in the tutorials/FAQ), and each week or whatever someone can create a separate thread, and the best patches from that thread will get transferred to the master list. Rather than having one song per month, it's better to make it general and let the users pick which songs they want (or they can be original patches, I guess). I don't really know the mods either, but we don't necessarily need the mods to help with everything.
Let's be more specific about the individual threads, otherwise it becomes an apples and oranges thing, it'll get too hard to judge and people will take the results personally. My suggestion, based on what people seem to ask for the most:
1. Lead instruments
2. Mallet sounds (i.e. piano, bells)
3. Stabs
4. Arpeggiator patches
5. Strings
6. Light (airy) pads
7. Dark (heavy) pads
8. Sub basses
9. Upper basses
10. Vocoder carriers
There'd also have to be a list of permitted synths. My gut feeling on that would be: z3ta+, V-Station, Albino, Vanguard, and FM7 since they are common, known to be compatible with most sequencers, and reasonably inexpensive.
As for percussion, I never use synths for that, but to each his own!
I also can't predict how much this initiative would take off, given that many people who have the technical know-how to produce kick-ass sounds don't like to give away all their secrets. On the other hand, it might inspire a lot of people who never bother making their own patches to make a few attempts. Guess it wouldn't hurt to try, right?
I'm also not sure what kind of judging system could be used (it would have to be something quick and easy if there's going to be a new thread every week).
Why don't you start a poll and summarize this idea, see how many people would go for it. If it gets a good response, I'll assume the task of maintaining the master list.

well all your ideas i agree with except 1...
i don't think the users should have the freedom to pick whatever sound, whatever track, whatever melody they want to recreate.
i want everyone on the same task. meaning, i want the entire board to attempt one song, or one part of one song that way we have people competing for the most resemblence.
i'm just thinking by the time we totally tear apart 1 track, people will have learned A LOT in that one month. then it's off to the next month with a different track and same scenario there.
if people are all over the place on different tangents then nothing in this forum will have changed. i just want people working together rather than so spread on on a million tangents.
then at the end of the week/month we will vote on the best sound. that user will write a quick review of how he approached recreating it, what synth, what settings, what fx
then off to the next week and next sound

One big question...are we sharing our patches with everyone? or are we keeping them to ourselves unless we want to give them away? I think we should give away our patches, but obviously you have all the effects you'll be putting on the sound and I believe that makes more difference to the sound than the patch.

It's nice in theory but I'm telling you it won't work. If you pick a trance track and get people trying to recreate some saw lead, all of the house and breaks and ambient and psy producers are going to ignore the thread. Similarly, if you pick a house track and ask people to try to recreate a certain rhodes/organ sound, none of the trance producers are going to make an attempt.
It's just too limited, and the whole effort is going to die out pretty quickly if you spend a month trying to get people to rip a single track apart. Guaranteed the track you pick is going to be a track that some people don't like.
Like I said, it wouldn't be whatever sound, whatever track, whatever melody - it would be a specific category. If those categories are too broad then you can always narrow it down, but you have to give people *some* latitude because many people here (myself included) are not that interested in just recreating the sounds used in popular tracks.
