Emo is a respected subculture and style of punk rock, and the third wave of it was completely ruined after getting mainstream attention, and its all The Get Up Kids faults. Emo does not mean "goth", or "sad and depressed", or "dressing in black", or any other shit you think it is. It's punk that introspects rather than extrospects, meaning the subject matter is revolving around the artists problems and not the worlds problems. If anyone calls themselves an emo, they're a complete poser tool. If they listen to emo (and not fucking deathcore or ballad ridden pop punk), then they're just fans of emo. Never call yourself or others an emo. It's like the "n-word" of punk and counter culture, just don't say it. The Get Up Kids are good, they just were used as the template for 3rd wave "emo".

The actual 3rd wave of emo is even more indie than old midwest emo, kind of slowly blending in with the bandcamp garage rock scene and punknews.org scene, which are also blending together slowly.
And to reiterate, goth music, metalcore, pop punk, black clothes, and any other kind of attitude or fashion are all not emo.
