hey guys.

what you recon about this?

i find myself sometimes using vangard and it makes my tracks sound really generic. im sure loads of synths have the same affect in making software users sound like they are trying to copy big name producers.

i have started to wonder if it is possible to make a completely new sound anymore.

what you guys think?

I'd say play around with different synthesis methods. It's difficult to make new synth sounds using subtractive synthesis, cause that's clearly most used and most easy to program. With FM/vector/wavetable -synths, you're sure to get less generic sounds. Another thing is just not to use synths so much, but acoustic samples instead.

I'm not really using Vanguard much myself, since I am not a really big fan of its sound(s)...

Though perhaps using different synths can help? I mean, to really 'switch' to other VSTi's for a while?

Three threads, where one would have been enough

Vanguard has a strong, if a tad amateurish sound. I also think it's 'Trancegate' function borders on gimmicky. It's okay, but I think I'll always find a better synth to spend my money on.

I don't think it's a synth by itself that has an amateurish sound, it doesn't make sounds by itself - it's the person behind it that makes it "sound" the way it is

Of course you can make a completely new sound. There is too much that hasn't been done...

Vanguard is aimed at more classic sounds, though.

The Vanguard or the TB

I meant if they were trying to make it for classic sounds (analogue) then they completely missed the mark (just like the 303). It is however excellent at doing its own wierd fx style leads and lfo madness. Yes, good for mid basses too! Compress it up and it sounds really nice and pumped.

Vanguard will definately become a classic in its own right I think.

Vanguard is great, fuck about with the 3 osc and you will get some pretty neat twinkly sounds, I think I've used it in nearly every production since I have aquired it. The factory presets are quite recognisable though, Ill admit that .

i think what has to happen now is more of none of this type of repetitve sound! it needs to have synth methods that modulate the whole sound over time. the sounds need to be complex. i think sound design will be taken into more detail rather than just taking a patch. like i think a better method of sound generarion in the futre is like morphing patches into each other, or like have a sequencer just for your sound patch.

i dont know, but there will be some new innovations thats for sure!
