I think Valentine's Day tends to become a "big deal" to women because of the expectations that our culture associates with the holiday. It is also a time that women naturally stop and evaluate their relationships. From a woman's perspective, it can be disheartening to see all kinds of romantic gestures being exchanged around you and not having a part in it, ESPECIALLY if they're in a relationship.
I agree that it is an extremely commercialized holiday and I actually think it means a lot more if a guy can be considerate and thoughtful on all of the other 364 days of the year. Of course, no woman would complain if a guy decided to do something nice for them on Valentine's Day or not! Just my point of view. Of course, I'm a woman who makes less of a "big deal" about Valentine's Day than most of the women I know, so I can't really speak for women in general.
