Parental permission required for sex ed in Kansas; abstinence-only course on the way

http://www.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/0...n.ap/index.html

In Kansas, parental permission is required for sex ed. Also, abstinence-only sex ed seems to be on the way.

I was just about to post this. Between the intelligent design theory and now this, Kansas is making great strides in showing us how the Midwest thinks.

I dont see why the fuss is about? You need your parents for alot of things when your under 18, in fact for most things. Why cant they get premmision about sex, which is something major.

It's not something major, it's a part of science and biology that needs to be taught to children/adolescents so that they understand how their own bodies work.

Just because America has this moral stigma regarding sex doesn't mean that people should be ignorant of the reality of nature. This concept of leaving people ignorant and relying on their abstinence training just doesn't fly with me and I'd say history proves that pretty well.

Not so easy at all for anyone 'different', like lesbians/gays, bi, transgender people, etc. If their parents don't approve of what may be a perfectly OK thing to do, there's a problem.

It's fucking education!?!! To me it's suprising that sex-ed is not cumpolsurary in America? That is really quite insane if you ask me! Should be almost as important as English or Math!

Correct, and even your regular sex-ed class in school doesn't cut it, because many people get emotional. I remember we had a very emotional teacher (a woman) who inevitably mixed the facts with opinions about men and women; and she didn't know a whole lot.

Actually, my true personal sex-ed came after reading the book "Sperm Wars" by Robin Baker.

My school always teaches abstinence as a sure-fire way NOT to get STD's. Which is true.

That's a shame. They should make sure to hire people who are very neutral on the kind of subject they are teaching (well _any_, really - but even moreso here).

Those dumb asses in Kansas seriously dont think their kids will learn about sex through high school sex parties & porn. Who are they kidding. In Grade 7 we were looking at Playboy Magazine in school ( it was a Catholic Elementary School ). My friend would take his fathers old issues when he threw them in the garbage ). When our teacher, Mr. Bossio caught us, he took the magazine away and put it in his desk. We all laughed later because we knew where it was going - his house. Also in Grade 7 & 8 several of us played a game where we all chased this one girl around the school yard & tripped her, and who ever felt her up the most won. The teachers never did anything, because they didn't want to deal with the sex topic. I must ask those parents - Where do you want your child learning about sex? In class, the street, the internet, or the schoolyard.
