Hey all,

I was wondering if it was feasible producing under a 64bit environment these days. As far as I heard, most rudimentary drivers are also available in 64bit at the moment?

Does anyone know whether the 64bit version of WinXP is (preferably a whole lot) more stable than the usual WinXP?

All in all, is it recommendable to switch to the 64bit enviroment?

I dont know from personal experience, but I would say stabilitity could be a bit of a pickle (seeing as the whole 64-32bit emulation thing must complicate things somewhat). But yeah most major hardware components have 64-bit drivers now.

Give it a go! Performance would be great, and theres really nothing to lose other than time/effort

Maybe install it on a different HD?

PS. Give us some benchmarks if you do it ;P

windows 64 the drivers suck for the most part. Wait till vista for a 64bit OS.

I read a 'review' of some kind on www.thehotfix.net about someone installing windows xp 64bit for the first time; he seemed pretty convinced about it.

fr0st - just out of curiosity - did you encounter problems yourself with winxp 64bit, or are you only a bit prejudiced?

My problems were with unsuported drivers for a NVIDIA graphics card, it takes them longer to develope them, as i said before just wait for 5 months until conroe and vista come out and all will be gravy.


I cant comment on audio drivers(as i use osx for audio), but im assuming companies will still prioritize xp over xp64

I don't think it's worth the money right now considering vista is launched in a few months (october - november). Then again, Windows is offering 120 days trial (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...tion/trial.mspx )so you can judge for yourself. AFAIK the 64 bit version isn't more stable, but merely gives a better performance on 64 bit programs, if you have a 64 bit processor.

the only advantage i can see now is if you want to use more thn 4 GB RAM.. other than that it wouldn't increase the performance noticable.

i don't have even drivers for a lot of my hardware (RME Multiface, TC Powercore, Access Virus TI, ..) so i won't switch to a x64 system. i'm satisified with my current setup and have more then enough performance headroom so i don't reach the maximale cpu usage with current projects.

Cakewalk's Sonar 5 has a 64 bit version - which includes all the effects and plug ins in 64 bit format. Supposedly there is also a wrapper that allows you to run 32 bit plug ins in the 64 bit OS without major problems. MOTU supposedly has 64 bit drivers for its interfaces also - but if you have some other brand, you are probably out of luck until they start supporting 64 bit.

I built and use two 64 bit systems at work. They have 3.7 ghz 64 bit amd cpus with windows xp 64 bit. I have had no problems with drivers and it was easily setup... stability is fine. I've only had one major software problem and that was with norton antivirus not installing, because it doesnt allow to be installed on win xp 64.

Otherwise I've found 32bit programs run fine on win xp 64.

I own both Win2k, WinXP and WinXP64 OEM's... What would basically be the best option to go for with music production?

I have a Dual Core AMD CPU, for which NO drivers appear come for Win2k though (only XP's)... Would that be a problem? Or do you have no need for that driver to get the best out of your PC even on Win2k?

use windows xp pro, also dl the sp2 patch for x2 processors.
