B-Tone - Spiraland ====> Montana - Theme From Concept (Umek Remix)

First mix the beatmatching sounds pretty solid. just curious i noticed that you seem to keep the volume of the incoming track pretty low until you jam it in. is that just a personal preference? do you do much EQing? i think you definitely kicked the volume up at the right point in the track, but was just thinking it sounds pretty abrupt. it doesn't sound bad at all, just curious. you didn't seem to do it as much in other mixes so maybe it was just this song i dunno.

Montana - Theme From Concept (Umek Remix) ====> M.I.D.O.R - Heatseeker

What i've liked about these first two mixes is that the mixing has been pretty solid, but the tracks although in the same style have been able to switch up the sound and contrast against each other in a good way.

M.I.D.O.R - Heatseeker ====> Mr Sam - Flying Around (Mojado Version)

Good change of pass with this next track. Once again it just seemed like you kept the track you're mixing in really distant in the sound space until you did your main bassline switch. sounds like you're a little afraid of having both tunes playing too loud because you're worried it's going to sound muddy. I dunno if it's just the way dj's mix tech trance, but it might be something to think about.

Mr Sam - Flying Around (Mojado Version) ====> M.I.D.O.R - Magnetic

another good sound change getting things a little more melodic again. beatmatching is still good.

M.I.D.O.R - Magnetic ====> Leon Boiler - Systomatic

i like the way you fit this track in here. some of the tracks you've plaid before this have had minor breakdowns, but here is a nice big one. because you've kept things relatively pumping up to this point, i think it definitely helps make this track and it's breakdown and build up more powerful. once again i don't really here any problems with the mixing.

Leon Boiler - Systomatic ====> Ferry Corsten - Whatever (Marcel Woods Remix)

Finally here at the last track of your minimix i feel like we've had some kind of change to the beat. all the other tunes have had very similar beats and it's really nice at the end to hear some kind of change to that.

Overall, personal tastes aside, i think that this is technically a great set. like i said i thought something might be going on with the way you bring tracks in, but that might just be stylistic for tech trance.

as i kinda hinted at in the last track...really the only thing i noticed that might be a negative was that all of the tracks you chose have very similar percussion elements and rythmic feeling to them and i could see a full length set of it getting a little dull because of it. my personal opinion of what you could do to really take your sets to the next level would be to really add some more variety. in this techy style there is really a lot to choose from. i'd like to see you work in some tech house or maybe even some techno with different feels and different basslines to really kind of break up that similar feel to tracks i mentioned because right now i think your mix is good, but a little linear and 2 dimensional...you could definitely improve and distinguish yourself from others by adding more diversity to your sound.

jason many thanks for that review. fuckin terrific.

i understand completly what you mean by the way i bring in tracks. usually what i do is i have the bass at about 7 0 clock with the high and mids at 12. as i bring the channel fader up i reduce the hi and mid eqs on the outgoing track to about 10 0 clock then i start bringing in the bass. on the pioneer mixer when the bass is reduced it can make the sound seem a little lower so i know what you mean. i dont usually mix like this but u were spot on when u said i was worried they would sound a little muddy if i had it any louder - i usually key my tracks but this set was done by ear so i was playing it safe. as for the first mix - thats actually just the way the track is. the incoming track was already the dominant by the time it gets to the point you are referring to - i think the only thing i did was take a little of the mid out.

the criticism you gave me is very useful and i will definatly take it into consideration for my next mix. thanks for reviewing the mix , greatly appriact4ed (how the fuck do you spell that?)
