I wish we had more EDM concerts [warning: whine thread]

WARNING:

THIS IS A WHINY THREAD.

there. I've warned you all twice.

I wish we had more EDM concerts, so event could start early and end early. I'm kinda sick of having so go out so late, and the fact I live so far from the core. It's just a pain up the ass to commute back without having to drop half your shitty paycheque.

Maybe i'm just getting fed up with not being fully satisfied when attending an EDM event?

I guess it's almost been recently everytime, i have been out. I always think to myself, was this worth it? would I do it again? it's usually been a no.

Is it because I get my hopes too high to see a dj play? [and most of the time, they don't end up impressing me? or making me dance till my feet burn.

or has it finally come the point, that I cannot tolerate lineups, shit venues, rude staff, odd layouts of clubs and most importantly, expensive cover charge

also, it doesn't help i'm reading more and more bad reviews of certain places in Toronto. [not just clubs/ certain promotion companies that have a huge line up of local dj's and charge from $25 upwards

At least with a concert, you can budget better. how gay does that sound?

Even if the concert wasn't such a great hit, it ends early and you go home early and you haven't spent AS much money as you would, paying a cabfare back e.t.c

pros:

public transport

sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

maybe, i'm finally becoming jaded.

[/whine]

thanks for letting me vent.

i'm curious to read some thoughts.

I always go to an event expecting just a relagur music night out, for the most part;I figure if I set my expectations high it usually wont deliver.Where as some people will expect their moneys worth ( and with good reason ) but i've found;the less concerned you keep yourself through-out the night the better time you'll make of it.

Anyway, sounds like you just need a very good night out.

I always have low expectations. So if something turns out to be suck, I don't get disappointed and if something turns out to be good, I'll enjoy it more.

I share a lot of your feelings though. Seems I'd rather hit up a small, local venue with friends than deal with human flotsam at big clubs more these days.

95% the sound sucks.

I'd say make the best of the situation but if the set is really that bad, then yeah...it kills it.

and yup - it's all about the music; everything else is just background noise.

I Understand one thing: With the prices so high, I better get a damn good show!! And recently, paying as much at $65 for PVD (which was actually worth it) but for other events $40+ that haven't been worth it at all!!

I mean, Morillo plays in NYC for a 12 hour set every MONTH, and its only $20 or less...why can't every DJ do that (dont answer that!)

Nothing has changed since the days of $20. If I am going to pay $60 I want some dancers in costume, a sick light show, good/friendly service, and more than 3 hours of a DJ's time. And I don't want him/her passing out from drunkenss/snorting coke/takin a whiff off the crack pipe.....This is your job, act professional!!

I still love going out and def dont mind the hours, but I feel your pain in some ways!!

What do you consider expensive cover charge?

Saturday night, Stereo charged people $35 at the door to hear Deko-Ze. THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS. That is standard for them. In London, Ibiza, and other major clubbing centres in Europe, cover is twice what we pay here.

However, on any given night in this city I could find a party or two with good tunes, good drinks and good people for $10.

It sounds like you just need to take a break.....I've been through those times where going out just seems too much and you think about having to deal with the crowds and the cover and you set yourself up to have a bad night out. Take a break for awhile and then go out and see if it feels the same way. Heck....I took a break for almost 5 years and came back and I love it more now then I did before.

I know what you mean about the public transport. Either I have to leave at 1:15ish to catch the last Go train or I stick out until the next morning to catch the first Go train or drive down and back(which sucks).

Never been to an EDM concert (where do they even exist?), would the times and cover be the only thing different compared to a reg. club?

As my sig says... "You are a robot. You are a product of the Machine. Become self-aware."

What I mean by this is that many club-goers have been fooled by the marketing machine that create superstar DJs. Many place all of their musical faith in and believe that these "icons" are the be the be-all-and-end-all of electronic music. They expect that if they pay these HUGE covers to see one of these top *labeled* DJs play, they'll exist in the presence of a higher life form and that they will transcend as a human being. Then they realize these DJs are mortal afterall and come to the realization you've had.

I don't agree with lowering your standards... what I'm saying is that if you love EDM, there ARE events and clubs that provide you with music and entertainment that will definitely suit you... but it's up to you to step out on the limb and occasionally stray from the "popular" clubs and DJs. Don't be fooled by the marketing and try to remember what it was like when you first entered into the electronic music world... remember? Think back... remember when you didn't know anything about the DJ... and you couldn't ID ANY of the tracks he was playing? When the lighting effects were new and seemed amazing? When all the people were there for the right reasons.. and not simply there to see "the #1 DJ in the world... errrr.. what's his name again?"

Trust me... these events still exist... but you have to step off the common path a bit
