UGH. So I have a few computers in the house. Two of my own, and then the rest of the family has thiers. For the past while I've left my music production computer NOT connect to the router. I recently wanted to add it to my network so I can share files, printers, etc.

The MINUTE I plugged it into the router - POP UPS LIKE CRAZY!

I didn't want to have to have virus scanners and spyware shit on it so it would run faster. I've been spending the last two days not working on music, but trying to get all this crap off my computer that I tried to keep clean.

So my question is, how can I have the computer hooked up to my network for file and printer sharing, but NOT ALLOW it to access the internet?

You could always format the harddrive then reinstall whatever OS you're using (prob Windows), then install proper anti-virus and all that, and just not enable your network card unless you have to.

1. It sounds like you've already been infected. So a re-install isn't such a bad idea.

2. If you do reinstall, install all the latest XP patches. I have an XP machine without any virus SW installed on it and it's perfectly fine... AS LONG AS YOU LEAVE IT BEHIND THE ROUTER.

3. Stay away from Outlook and Internet Explorer. Use Firefox, etc. instead.

The other likely possibility is that the other machines IN YOUR HOUSE are infected, and that's where your problem is coming from. The router will only act as a firewall for outside internet traffic, not things on the local network.

So even if you setup a second network that's not 'internet connected', as long as your other machines are connected to it you could still have problems.

You should setup a firewall on your production machine.

Hey. Well its odd to have immediate popups without having installed something that also installed adware, which would be your own fault :P. Grab Spybot and Adaware and get all that shit off. You could also format it like placebo mentioned but thats sometimes really annoying to back everything up. As for keeping it off the net, if you have a worthwhile router, then youll have filter settings in the routers config to deny a certain internal IP access to the internet. Linksys for instance has a security config that allows up to I think 8 (maybe 10?) IP ranges to deny access. This wont kick the computer off of the network, it jsut wont allow data to and from the wan jack to talk to that particular IP. Read up on the manual. It'll help solve a lot of networking questions .

Thanks so much everyone... luckily i DO have a linksys router, I'm going to check that out when I get home (I'm at work now), but that sounds like the answer!

I just downloaed some anti-spyware apps and a virus scanner. Damn the internet hahaha. It's funny because NONE of my other computers have any problems (though have all have anti-spyware software installed). I guess whatever it was it came from another machine, that's crazy I didn't know that could happen.

you can use ethernet hubs to set up multiple computers on a network. think of them like a router, except without the online part.

Yeah, well thats an issue that cant be surpassed by being connected to a partial internet active network . He could install AV software if he was that worried about it or hope that his sister or whoever updates regularly. Easy way to ensure file safety is to get a DVD-RAM drive and back up to RAMs everyday or every week or something.

Ok, so networks are what I do between writing tracks and posting here.

So, it's very easy to prevent a computer on a domestic network from connecting to the internet. There is a second issue already noted due to other computers on your network with internet access potentially attacking yours.

so.

1. TURN ON YOUR WINDOWS FIRWALL. Actually this applies to everyone. Do it now. I don't care if you think your router/firewall toy will protect you. It won't. Really.

Actually the Windows firewall is subject many of the same problems, but at least it provides you with some protection from other computers on your local network.

2. Stopping one specific computer getting onto the internet.

Ok, by default your computer will pick up its network configuration via DHCP from your router. What you need to do is manually set yup your computer on the same subnet.

Step 1. pop open a dos window and type "ipconfig"

Step 2. Open the network connections control panel, right click on "Local Area connection" and pick Properties.Scroll through the list to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and double click it.

Step 3. click te radio button to "Use the following ip address". Look at the ip address procuced from step one. Enter the first three octets (first three numbers between periods. Frequently 192.168.1)
If you have a linksys, netgear or something similar it starts assigning you addresses down the bottom of the subnet, so pick something high but less than 254, so let's pick 252 for now. The odds are you final result will look like 192.168.1.252. net the subnet mask, this needs to be 255.255.255.0

Leave the rest blank and pick ok and and then ok again.

At htis point your computer should be setup on your local network, but becaus you left the DNS settings and default gateway blank your computer has no way of talking with the outside world.

After doing this you need to stick FX Teleport on all the other computers on your network and make use of the network.
