Hi buds, now that I have finally built my PC, I have two things yet to buy, one I got it sorted with is the LCD Screen, getting myseld a 19", and the other one are the monitors (speakers) cause I'm tired of monitoring everything through my headphones.
The thing is that at places like NewEgg.com they don't offer the kind of monitors for music production, they offer $300 set of logitek speakers but when I think of Logitek the picture of "Speakers for movies" comes to my mind and that is not what I think I should be looking for.

So, could you please guide me to some Monitoring Speaker Brand names or web sites where I could do my search?

You might also want to check out www.gak.co.uk and www.dv247.com. They are both UK based shops but only cater for music producers so they stock a wide range of speakers from various manufacturers for monitoring purposes. You can use these to get a better idea of what's around.

for a lower budget (of around $400US, i say low, because don't waste your money, if you can't afford $400, save, cause nothing below this will usually suffice)

go for a 6.5" cone for a small space, 5" is usually really lacking on bass, where 8" can be to powerful and fatiguing (this is just a generalization, but even auditioning doesn't paint a 100% clear picture, cause it will be completely different in your studio)

i use event tr-6 and love them...

also check out, krk, they're not bad

i'm personally not a huge fan of the other competitors in this rage (ie. behringer, samsung, m-audio) didn't like their sound.

if you have money to drop, then for sure dyn audio or genelec or even mackie as skot_e mentioned, but you're looking at almost $1000 for those

but heck ive seen people produce good stuff on those cheap ass dell speakers that come with the desktops....

Hehe, I've done it all with my Sennheisers , but I'm losing my audition already
I've been told this already, "how can you think of making music without real monitors?"
Monitors are not cheap and I'm working hard (not only making music) to afford them now.
But on topic, I'd really like to know the difference between those two types.

One of the best places I've found for shopping for audio geekery is Sweetwater - great prices, AMAZING support (everyone I've talked to who's shopped there as well agrees), and they have a great selection. A great place to browse.

For monitors, my Mackies are tried and true. I bought a pair of the HR624s and haven't looked back. You'll hear time and again that anything below $500 just isn't worth it - but sometimes, especially when you're just starting to build your studio, you need some good and relatively cheap monitors.

They're accurate, but not fatiguing, and have really stepped up the quality of my mixes. For $450 it really is a great bargain. If you have the money to burn, though, get something a bit more expensive.

I've mixed on a pair of those before and was thoroughly impressed. Again, you're dropping one large on a pair of speakers, but if you have the money in your pockets it's going to be worth it.

As you have eluded to, active are powered. They have an internal amp with a x-over to split the signal to the two/three speakers (depending on your setup), whereas passive speakers have no power and will require an external amp. if buget is an issue you could look at some 1970's/80's hi fi speakers and amp. - from a second hand dealer.

companies like maudaunt-short, celestion-ditton and warfdale made nice cabinets back then.

get a pair with a 1 inch dome tweeter and no nonsence woofer.

dont let power ratings like 30watts put you off. these are proper figures. im running a set of mordaunt-short ms30 speakers (8inch cone 1 inch dome tweeter front ported) and using an early 80's hitachi 50watt rms amp. the sound from these speakers is very flat and open because the crossover in them is so simple.

my setup cost £50 for the speakers and the amp and they are immaculate
