for a lower budget (of around $400US, i say low, because don't waste your money, if you can't afford $400, save, cause nothing below this will usually suffice)
go for a 6.5" cone for a small space, 5" is usually really lacking on bass, where 8" can be to powerful and fatiguing (this is just a generalization, but even auditioning doesn't paint a 100% clear picture, cause it will be completely different in your studio)
i use event tr-6 and love them...
also check out, krk, they're not bad
i'm personally not a huge fan of the other competitors in this rage (ie. behringer, samsung, m-audio) didn't like their sound.
if you have money to drop, then for sure dyn audio or genelec or even mackie as skot_e mentioned, but you're looking at almost $1000 for those
