More Liberal Behaviour Modification Schemes... Drop out? No driver's licence

Lame!!

The nanny state strikes again!

quote:
Students who quit school may have to wait until they are 18 to be able to apply for a driver's licence, under legislation expected to be passed by the Ontario government on Thursday.

At the same time, the provincial Liberals also plan to introduce other changes to the Education Act meant to increase graduation rates at the province's high schools, including new co-op programs, courses and a new type of high-school diploma.

Dropouts could face fines of up to $1,000 and parents who do not push their children to attend school could also be financially penalized.

Only 71 per cent of eligible high-school students graduated in the 2004-05 school year, while about 45,000 young people drop out each year.

Education Minister Gerard Kennedy, who tabled the proposed changes in December 2005, said the government wants to increase the graduation rate to 85 per cent by 2010, halving the number of dropouts.

But NDP education critic Rosario Marchese said in December that the plan was short-sighted.

"In my view, if a students needs to leave for economic, academic, emotional or social reasons, they will find it a punitive way to hold students in school."

The province's current laws, passed in 1954, require students to stay in school until 16.

for once i actually agree with the NDP

BTW... its funny how everyone was afraid of stephen harper's so called hidden agenda which never materialized. Meanwhile, who has been the greatest force in taking away our rights? Our very own ontario liberals.

I think that if you drop out of highschool for no good reason you should be sterilized.

How 'bout that?

Just remember that the provincial election is in 2007. And also remember that you never hear of such ridiculous bans when conservatives are in power. In fact it was Harris that actually EXTENDED the drinking hours from 1 until 2.

When the conservatives pass a law... it usually has a useful purpose. Such as the new law banning 50 year olds from screwing 14 year olds.

please move to Alberta if this concerns you, in Ontario,we have a high dropout rate.

If you have a solution, rather than political rhetoric...air it, cause as it stands now you are complaining.

We need to solve this problem. The Liberals have the foresight to make parents accountable for their children, and children, accountable for themselves.

This should be followed by an insane amount of funding by the conservative lackys, into the Ontario education system. Which will NOT happen. Make school a worthwhile venture, so that people will stay....let's see how the conservative autocrats deny any increase in funding.

This is more about the education situation and the status of our youth, than it does about politics.

crime, education, unemployment rates...etc etc would all be positivly affected by this.

By denying driver's licences to kids who drop out, you are actually promoting poverty. Why? Perhaps the kid is forced to get a job due to family hardship? Now how will the kids get to work in areas without public transit?

The liberals really need to think twice about this law. If they really wanted to make someone accountable, they would say that a child must stay in school until 18 unless their parents say otherwise. But this liberal government has a pattern of thinking they know better than everyone else.
