More Liberal Behaviour Modification Schemes... Drop out? No driver's licence
Lame!!
The nanny state strikes again!
| quote: | Students who quit school may have to wait until they are 18 to be able to apply for a driver's licence, under legislation expected to be passed by the Ontario government on Thursday.
At the same time, the provincial Liberals also plan to introduce other changes to the Education Act meant to increase graduation rates at the province's high schools, including new co-op programs, courses and a new type of high-school diploma.
Dropouts could face fines of up to $1,000 and parents who do not push their children to attend school could also be financially penalized.
Only 71 per cent of eligible high-school students graduated in the 2004-05 school year, while about 45,000 young people drop out each year.
Education Minister Gerard Kennedy, who tabled the proposed changes in December 2005, said the government wants to increase the graduation rate to 85 per cent by 2010, halving the number of dropouts.
But NDP education critic Rosario Marchese said in December that the plan was short-sighted.
"In my view, if a students needs to leave for economic, academic, emotional or social reasons, they will find it a punitive way to hold students in school."
The province's current laws, passed in 1954, require students to stay in school until 16.

for once i actually agree with the NDP
BTW... its funny how everyone was afraid of stephen harper's so called hidden agenda which never materialized. Meanwhile, who has been the greatest force in taking away our rights? Our very own ontario liberals.
