Cars, traffic signs, computers, ATMs, vending machines... it's a common phenomenom: I do it all the time myself (except with computers), and I remember reading an article about how Germans used to greet ATMs when they withdraw money, for example. I remember I one time I told a vending machine to stop spitting tin cans, as I didn't want that much soda. Naturally, the vending machine didn't find my words convincing, and kept spitting 
One reason behind it is that machines are quite recent, and we're used to talking to others in order to express our thoughts and desires, so we end up extending this feeling to machines as well. Another reason behind it is the same as talking to one's self or making dumb rhetorical questions: it's a cognitive process, a way of talking to your own consciousness.
