last year we bought an 1993 buick regal and we named her "auntie carol" and we took her on our honeymoon. Whenever the car started acting up we would say things like "come on auntie carol!" or "atta girl auntie carol".

But with the way technology is going, voice activation will become more common plase as we get lazier and lazier... thats what i believe...But your second theory also makes sense...i mean, alot of people read out loud when reading instructions as this helps you to understand what your doing...and gives you confidence. So maybe thats why...Interesting.
